"Maybe this is a good idea but Congress should vote to approve it" is, in this circumstance, an inferior position to "This is an absolutely ludicrous idea and Congress should have to vote on it so we can say hell no."

The situation in Minneapolis: even though the ICE presence in the city is greatly reduced, and national attention has moved on, a huge portion of our population remains essentially in hiding, devastating the schools and economy. In particular, much of the education system remains in crisis

Big talk. But I LIKE this kind of big talk. Break 'em all up - the tech companies, too.

The entire Democratic strategy debate β€” "moderate" or move left? fight or compromise? β€” is based on a misreading of data. Voters don't think Dems are too progressive; they think Dems are weak. The actual math on what to do about this isn't even close!

Feels like a good time to mention I'm primarying Tom Suozzi, one of the only 7 House Dems to vote for ICE funding last month.

The media and academia have an obligation to not remain neutral in the face of authoritarianism. These institutions need liberal institutions to exist in any meaningful way. Authoritarianism is an existential threat. Our devotion to "neutrality" will keep us from fighting for our own survival.

"We don’t have to wait on the government to give us permission to learn a history we can reach for ourselves."

This is really my bottom line. Hence why we are organizing Black Zine Fair again this year and why I am co-organizing a grassroots public history convening among other things...

"The president had DOJ illegally cover up documents about allegations he sexually assaulted a child after Congress specifically passed a law requiring they be disclosed" is, in and of itself, enough to merit rapid removal from office regardless of how true or credible the underlying allegation is.

Part of the problem here is a long-standing issue of mine: The public gets a huge benefit from beat journalismβ€”but the journalism industry does not, by and large, recognize beat journalism for its value or when it comes to awards and prizes. Those go to investigations and "one big thing" features.

What if I told you part of training given in the military & government circles is recognizing foreign agents. If you're a 3 and she's a 9, she's just not that into you, she's a honey pot.

I love them too, and find it amusing when watching a movie or TV show set in the DC area and it becomes instantly obvious that they didn't actually film their Metro scenes here.

yeah I’ve become much less tolerant of β€˜directionally correct’ stuff as a direct result of RFK. it matters if something is true. yes, even if the motivation for the lies is understandable and the target of them unsympathetic like big pharma is/was.

Democrats push for tariff refunds, daring vulnerable GOP lawmakers to join them A new Senate bill would require reimbursements to businesses within 180 days. House legislation calls for even quicker action.

Three top Democrats are proposing a 180-day deadline for CBP to pay refunds for all of the Trump tariffs the Supreme Court just invalidated. The 180 day timer would kick off once the bill became law.

ItΒ directs CBP to prioritize refunding small businesses.

Meanwhile, those sheriffs are doubling down on cooperating with ICE, saying they'll continue cooperating in any other way they can, and are apparently exploring whether they can sue the state over the new law.

sorry to be such a cliche or a middle aged man but i’ve been reading and thinking a lot lately about the late roman republic and our current moment and i can’t help but conclude what actually matters is not allowing power to concentrate itself among people who self-select out of a need to dominate

So I think it's fair to say that only a tiny, tiny percentage of the US population was tied up with Epstein. But weirdly maybe 70% of the people in the field of evolutionary psychology.

It was told by a Flying Tiger pilot who was shot down over enemy territory in China. Fortunately, he was picked up by villagers and hidden in a couple's house.

"The first thing they did was to take his boots away. He thought: 'They're going to take everything I have of value and then turn me over to the Japanese,'" Jobe told the audience.

When the Japanese came into this house, they mercilessly beat the couple, and then another Japanese soldier came and mumbled something, and suddenly all of them left the home and the town.

Touching story

The pilot later discovered that the couple had given his boots to a young man who left a trail out of the town; the Japanese believed the trail was left by the Flying Tiger, so they followed it.

The pilot waited at the home till a missionary arrived to help escort him back to his base. Before leaving, he asked the missionary to ask the couple why they risked their lives to save his. "Their answer was simplicity itself: 'When the Japanese come, we see fear in the eyes of the Chinese; when the Flying Tigers come, we see fear in the eyes of the Japanese,'" said Jobe.

If you think honesty and accuracy aren't worthwhile ends in and of themselves, I feel deeply sorry for you.

Because once you start telling or repeating lies or mistruths about your enemy, now you've got a reputation for lying, and the question is no longer whether you're lying, it's who or what are you willing to lie about.

This has nothing to do with respectability politics. It's that if you want to have a reputation for being credible and trustworthy, then you have to be credible and trustworthy _all the time_. You don't get to pick and choose.

Again, I know it feels good to send a donation to someone who is finally going to send Mitch McConnell or Lindsey Graham packing, but you're going to see a *lot* more bang for your buck with less exciting but much more meaningful state legislative races.

This is a great way to do that:

My wife picked up some pretty good post-valentine's day discount chocolate this weekend. Unfortunately, they don't have a key inside to what shapes are what flavors, so I'm now serving as my wife's food taster to ensure she doesn't eat any with peanut butter in them.
