I swear if I see another film where someone sitting in an old theater imagines themselves at the person on screen I might lose it. πŸ˜‘

The Bride! is certainly taking a lot of big swings. Unfortunately, it misses almost every single one of them. Jessie Buckley’s effort and fun makeup and hair designs can’t save what is ultimately a sloppy and poorly written film.

Yup. That’s pretty much how I felt. My score might be a little lower because I felt it dragged on too long at the end.

I have shared on Bluesky before about how the end shot of that film startled the crap out of me! πŸ˜…

It’s not on the current list, but I will get to it. I think it’s a good doppelgΓ€nger film and I want to cover some of those in the future.

This image is a collage highlighting the films of director Denis Villeneuve, arranged in a grid against a dark blue background.

Top row:
β€’	A portrait of Denis Villeneuve in a black jacket, looking slightly to the side.
β€’	The poster for Un 32 aoΓ»t sur terre (August 32nd on Earth) showing a woman in a yellow jacket standing in a desert landscape.
β€’	The poster for MaelstrΓΆm, featuring a dark background with the title in bold white letters and a small red fish motif.
β€’	The poster for Polytechnique, showing a close-up profile of a woman’s face in muted tones.

Second row:
β€’	The poster for Incendies, dominated by deep red colors and overlapping faces in profile.
β€’	The poster for Prisoners, showing Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal with a dark, tense atmosphere.
β€’	The poster for Enemy, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal with a city skyline blending into the top of his head.
β€’	The poster for Sicario, with Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin walking through a dusty border landscape.

Bottom row:
β€’	The poster for Arrival, showing Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and a large alien spacecraft hovering over a field.
β€’	The poster for Blade Runner 2049, featuring neon orange and blue lighting with Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford.
β€’	The poster for Dune, showing TimothΓ©e Chalamet and an ensemble cast against a desert backdrop.
β€’	The poster for Dune: Part Two, showing Paul Atreides and Chani standing in front of a bright desert sun.

The collage visually traces Villeneuve’s career from his early French-language films to his major Hollywood science fiction epics

Denis Villeneuve has quietly built a very strong sci-fi filmography over the past ten years.

Where does Arrival rank among modern sci-fi films?

Jonesy is my favorite too! The others I can think of don’t really come close because they’re are technically not regular cats like Jake from The Cat from Outer Space. 😸

This promo image features key artwork from Arrival on the left side. A massive, dark oval alien spacecraft hovers vertically over an open landscape at sunrise, with helicopters flying nearby. In the foreground are three main characters: a large close-up of Amy Adams looking upward with a thoughtful, concerned expression; Jeremy Renner standing slightly behind her, looking off to the side; and Forest Whitaker in military uniform in the lower foreground.

On the right side of the graphic, the title ARRIVAL appears in large, thin gray letters against a white background. At the top right, it reads SEASON 2 EPISODE 9 next to the circular Movie Postmortem logo. Along the bottom right, bold yellow text reads WITH SPECIAL GUESTS, and beside it is the logo for Based on a Book: A Book Club Podcast, featuring three women standing together under stylized pink lettering.

Appreciated the β€œscript stitch up” shoutout from our friends at the Vaguely Nerdy Podcast! 😁

Their breakdown of the film and suggested script changes show just how much room for improvement there was in this film.

Yes! She’s certainly not the only person who has this issue. I think some people feel compelled to be writer/directors when they only excel in one of those jobs.

I’ve learned my lesson. I’m not going to bother watching a film that I know she’s written.

The Percy Jackson ones. Not a huge fan of them or anything and I’ve never seen the show, but curious to hear your thoughts as it relates to them as adaptations.

Nothing about this makes any sense! I know writing by committee is the norm for these types of films, but this feels like a bizarre starting point.

Yes, the series is still unbelievably strong! I think part of the reason was that they didn’t overstay the initial welcome. Doing only 3 films initially instead of like 6! πŸ˜…

The breaks helped too!

03.03.2026 15:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It was a nice change of pace from Tim Burton although it was still in his wheelhouse. He nailed the soap opera style. I think it would have worked better as a tv series (like the original series itself) but no way that would have happened when the film came out.
