This is a bad place for a copper/sulfide mine. That should be enough to vote NO on HJR 140. But maybe even more importantly, this affects how Republicans will continue to pick apart our federal public lands using the Congressional Review Act. This is a perversion of the use of the Congressional Review Act. Land management issues are too complex to treat like simple "rules" that can be reversed permanently by the CRA. Filibuster-proof, simple majority votes that affect federal public land without any public input. It's the complete opposite of the intent of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976. The public land order (PLO 7917) that put a 20-year mining ban was science based and took public comment in accordance with the law (FLPMA of 1976). The public overwhelmingly approved this mining ban with over 95% of the 675,000 public comments in support. The Stewardship Caucus names on the above list had a big press conference last fall saying they would make "science based, bipartisan decisions" about land management issues. I particularly enjoyed the staffer who answered the phone for Senator Sheehy. He said he couldn't take my call since I was a non-constituent. He hung up on me after I said I was an American citizen and I was calling about federal public land. So much for the Co-Chair of the Stewardship Caucus in the Senate caring about what citizens think about public land decisions. I found it interesting since Senator Daines' staffer, the other Montana Senator, was happy to listen to me.
