Each year, the WSU Department of Chemistry hosts a pumpkin carving party to prepare pumpkins for spooky chemistry experiments, including flaming pumpkins, foaming pumpkins, and exploding pumpkins. This event is a delightful way to welcome the fall season and celebrate all the festivities.

We’re excited to announce that Paul Buckley is our 2025 champion! With a guess of 1,609 grams, Paul came the closest to the actual candy corn weight of 1,521 grams. Impressive eye work, Paul!

As promised, Paul received candy corn and a $15 Starbucks gift card.

On September 10, the Chemistry Club organized their much-anticipated annual ice cream social, which took place on the fourth floor of Fulmer Hall. This event is a highlight of the academic calendar, as it provides both new and returning students with an opportunity to mingle and foster connections.

In celebration of National Chemistry Week and Mole Day, esteemed chemists from Washington State University and the University of Idaho are joining forces through our local American Chemical Society, Washington-Idaho Border Section, to host an engaging event titled "The Hidden Life of Spices."

By rewiring the Agilent 3Q, Liz will retain the ability to operate the system using the conventional method (i.e., sinusoidal waveforms) while adding the capacity to explore digital waveforms and their capacity to realize narrow windows of m/z isolation.

Speed-running the disassembly, rewiring, and reassembly of a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. Graduate Student Liz Groetsema (Clowers Lab) is developing a new approach to analyzing ions using digital waveform technology.

We are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to our 2025 chemistry cohort! The anticipation leading up to their arrival was filled with excitement, and we are so pleased to have them as part of our chemistry family. We look forward to the contributions they will make and the experiences we will share.
