Unpopular opinion: I like the expanded strength score in AD&D 1st and 2nd editions.

There's something cool being able to say "I have an 18 / 92 strength."

I also like that it adds a buffer between 18 (human range strength) and 19 (hill giants!).

That's probably a typo, is my guess. 2nd edition bugbear get +2 to damage from strength as a monster. I'd say max 18/00 with a +1 to Strength and Dexterity, personally.
