Is adventure game?

Feels like going at a snail’s pace because doing Witcher 3 on console, but ultimately yeah, lol! Excited to try The Drifter soon!

Oh yeah there’s no number crunch. At most you’re looking at your Brawn score to add to melee and brawl damage

Small addendum on the Star Wars thing: SWRPG came out before Genesys and is still an excellent system. Genesys rebalanced the system and changed the way Talents work (think like D&D Feats). Used to be Talent Trees, Genesys made Talents more freeform. Diff numbers & Talents, same great system.

I don’t have experience with the Hero system to compare unfortunately

I’ve never had more exciting games than Genesys. And it’s built to accomodate ANY setting with minimal work. Additionally, if you like Star Wars, the Star Wars RPG’s are basically the same system (Edge of the Empire, Force and Destiny, Age of Rebellion). Not totally, but close enough.

Combat has enough crunch to satisfy tactical TTRPG types but still narrative not to lock you or your GM in a box. Did your shot miss your foe? Well, look at all that narrative Advantage you rolled: you smirk, tell your foe “I didn’t miss,” they turn to see the explosive barrel behind them hissing.

For instance, you don’t have to keep track of ammo unless, perhaps, you roll a certain amount of Threat (which is NOT failure, but narrative complication). Maybe then your gun jams, or your quiver is empty. Rather than worrying about keeping cheat sheets or lists of spells, you can just tell a story

More times than in any other RPG I’ve run, I’ve had players ask, “wait, that’s possible? I can do that?” Within reason, yes you can: because Genesys is more about telling a compelling narrative than consulting endless charts and tracking every little thing. It handles things narratively.

This means you can get interesting results like failing with advantage or succeeding with threat for instance. The critical results, Triumph/Despair, are only found on the upgraded versions of the dice. This is a thematic and good thing! You need skill to crit usually, and bad crit only when matters

How does it work? When you roll, you roll both positive (top row) and negative dice. There are two axes of results that cancel each other out: success/failure and advantage/threat. Whatever isn’t cancelled out is the result. Success/failure is “did you do the thing?” and adv/threat is “what else?”
