If they had done that, the only option for Benjamin Netanyahu and other right-wing expansionists would have been to move under the Russian sphere of influence, but Russia is pariah state and it would have alienated them from all their other traditional allies.

The US could have put a stop to Israeli occupation and the settlements decades ago, and they could ofc still do it now. Clinton, Obama, Biden could have done it. But they all wanted to keep Israel as the regional policeman.
