I think some of the pundits have twisted themselves into a position like: the fact that Muslim voters don't seem to share our crank obsession against trans people, and voted for the pro trans rights Greens, is proof in of itself of sectarian politics.

Every Day He Eats the Book This week: my god I want Matt Goodwin to lose. Also: a new way of seeing the world; and some very old work on a very old bus.

"I have given this a lot of thought, and: I really, really need Matt Goodwin to lose tomorrow’s Denton & Gorton by-election. For the good of us all, that man needs to be repudiated, and his ideas stomped into the dust."

On one of the worst people in British politics.

Statement made by
Wes Streeting
Secretary of State for Health and Social Care
Labour
Ilford North Commons
Statement
Today, I am updating the House that the preliminary work to establish the PATHWAYS clinical trial into the prescription of puberty suppressants for children and young people with gender incongruence has been paused.

The MHRA, the agency authorising the clinical trial, has written to the trial sponsors, King’s College London, to raise concerns regarding the trial which will now be discussed with clinicians. On Friday, DHSC published a copy of the MHRA letter, which is available here: Sponsor-letter110226.pdf(opens in a new tab).

Discussions between the MHRA and King’s College London will begin this week to address these new concerns. I will review the outcome of those discussions, taking clinical advice.

I have always been clear about the red lines regarding this trial and the prescription of puberty blockers – the safety and wellbeing of the children and young people and always being led by the expert clinical evidence. Those have been - and will remain - the driving considerations in every decision being made.

The clinical trial will not start to recruit until the issues the MHRA raised have been resolved. It will only be allowed to go ahead if the expert scientific and clinical evidence and advice conclude it is safe to do so.

Dr Hilary Cass has criticised the medicines regulator for blocking a clinical trial into puberty suppressors for children, saying it had made β€œcompletely bizarre” claims, hadn’t produced any new evidence and seemed to be responding to β€œpolitical pressure”, not science.

The Pathways trial was paused after the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) published a letter to the research team on Fridayο»Ώ, raising fresh concerns about potential long-term harms to children.

The MHRA had previously approved the study, which aims to examine the impact of puberty suppressing hormones on about 220 children aged from 11 to 15 who clinicians believed might benefit from the drugs.

But in its letter, which came after threats of legal action from parents and criticism of the trial from gender-critical campaigners such as JK Rowling, the regulator said children should only be allowed to take part after the age of 14.

Cass told The Observer she was β€œdisappointed” by the MHRA’s intervention. β€œThere are no new research findings and the MHRA hasn’t presented any new evidence,” she said. β€œIt feels to me like they are responding to political pressure rather than to science.”

Wes Streeting: on cancelling the puberty blockers trial, my decisions are "always being led by the expert clinical evidence."

Hilary Cass, his expert clinician of choice*: "It feels to me like they are responding to political pressure rather than to science... completely bizarre."

*Until today.

It's obvs not on the level of deadnaming trans people, but I still dislike calling public figures by the wrong name, even if it is politicians I detest (e.g. George Osborne got this a lot) - it just comes across as churlish. It also wears very thin after the 1000th time you've seen it!

Reform UK suspends by-election campaign activist over β€˜antisemitic and misogynistic’ posts EXCLUSIVE: Adam Mitula, Reform UK’s interim campaign manager in Tameside, has been assisting Matt Goodwin's Gorton and Denton by-election campaign

So it turns out Matt Goodwin's Reform campaign manager was a holocaust-denying Nazi who said he would "never touch a Jewish woman.”

When do we start seeing all the coverage of the antisemitism crisis in Reform UK?

It especially rankles in a context where Dr Beth Upton didn't get anonymity, and instead was subject to an all-out demonisation campaign by our gutter press. Whereas the miserable toad quoted in the article gets to contribute to that campaign behind a shroud of anonymity.

There's also a quote from a "furious insider" complaining about her leaving, while making a point of misgendering her, and that level of disrespect is exactly why she should leave if she wants to. The UK doesn't deserve her.

β€˜Carnage of concern and upset’: Women’s Institute groups close after transgender ban Members warn NFWI decision has opened up toxic culture that deters younger women from joining

At least 12 WI groups are closing or considering closure after the organisation barred transgender women from membership.

Members say more groups are likely to close, and that the federation’s decision has opened up a toxic, traditionalist culture that will deter younger women from joining.
