Francis Crick was a staggering brilliant scientist who famously co-discovered the B-helix structure of DNA as well as lots of foundational molecular biology.

In the lunch break, all conference participants visited the Parque Museo de la Memoria, a memorial parc at the university site that commemorates the ~30000 victims of the terror days of the dictatorial regime in Argentina in the 1970s. Very impressive!

The Atacama desert covers a large area. Google searches suggest some places within it are the dirests (nonpolar) areas on earth, Some weather stations in the Atacama never recorded rain. Certain areas receive less than 1mm of rain per year, and some have gone over 500 years without a single drop.

Now visiting the LIII Annual Meeting of the Argentinian Biophysical Society in Buenos Aires, where I will present our work tomorrow in a IUPAB-supported keynote talk.

Las 'The Clowns of God' van Morris West. Interessant boek: een mix van een detective, machtspolitiek en gedachten over geloof en religie. Ik vond het inspirerend, maar het einde wat vervreemdend.

Ik las in ND een mooie review hiervan en wilde het ook graag - maar dat lukt met agenda helaas niet.

JA21 is inhoudelijk natuurlijk verschrikkelijk maar in zo'n combi sneeuwt dat wellicht onder (en eigenlijk is het verschil met VVD ook niet zo groot)

Als de VVD dan per se niet wil, dan moet er maar eens gekeken naar een regering zonder VVD

TU-wetenschappers @ceesdekker.bsky.social, Pier Siebesma en Leo de Vreede krijgen een synergy grant van het @erc.europa.eu voor de onderzoeksprojecten waar zij hoofdonderzoeker van zijn. De beurzen bedragen gemiddeld 10 miljoen euro per beurs en hebben een looptijd van zes jaar.

This large 10 M€ grant will allow us to explore novel aspects such as the SMC molecular motor mechanism, the many ‘control knobs’ on these motors, and their role in gene expression, e.g. in facilitating enhance-promotor interactions and silencing extrachromomosal circular DNA.
