This summer HPU will be offering our free online economics PD course for teachers, educational officers, and educational assistants (Why learn economics?). The course is delivered in collaboration with the Hawai’i Council on Economic Education and will explain the causes of economic phenomena around us such as inflation, Hawaii’s high housing costs, and provide guidance for educators of all subjects and grade levels to bring age-appropriate economics content into their classrooms. The course is assessed through quizzes, a group lesson plan, and a final exam; there is no portfolio.

This free course provides three (3) graduate-level credits in Education (ED) which count towards HIDOE salary reclassification. Furthermore, all course participants will receive a 100% scholarship from HPU, and there are no textbooks or other class materials required to purchase. The course will run over eight weeks during the DOE summer break on Tuesdays, June 8th–July 28th 2026 at 5:15-8:15pm, but can also be taken semi-asynchronously by watching the recordings each week.

Please see our course flyer for further details, as well as our enrollment form. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly (Gerard Dericks, gdericks@hpu.edu).

"We know that math is more than numbers and equations, and children should experience math in places other than the classroom. We also know how important it is that students see math as relevant and make connections to real-world experiences."
