A few weeks back I shared January's 'to do' list from my wall calendar. It wasn't a long list of things to get done but a reminder to keep an eye on my mental and physical health before I burnout.
I thought I'd share this month's message on the run up to half term (a week-long school holiday).
Interviews will explore barriers and facilitators to inclusion, as well as ways forward.
No sensitive info about schools, students, or staff will be collected. Any identifying details will be removed from publications.

I had no idea that I looked this intense when I speak publicly.

It was great to meet the newest cohort and share some of my internship experiences.

I'm still working on that perfect mix of research and life (and how these two definitely interlink). I wish I didn't need to do work to improve healthcare. I hope that in a few years time this work becomes obsolete, although I am certain it won't.
A little bag of stickers goes a long way.
Then actually doing the Phd itself. Y'know, that little ole thing. It's too easy to think that I haven't done anything whilst I wade through all of this.
My sticker chart is a visual time line that shows me I did what I set out to do, between the school runs and through chronic pain.
And the meetings that could be emails, emails that could be a text. Things that don't need to be told to me at all - software updates, full-staff emails, this research group, this random thing I needed to sign up to two years ago and they're still emailing me, acronyms galore.
02.02.2026 08:08 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I spend so much time on lots of fiddly administration, expenses, applications, submissions, asking permission for stuff I'm going to do either way.
And the waiting; waiting on feedback, waiting on ethical review, waiting on recruitment, waiting on responses. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting.
Stickers of colourful smiley faces, larger stickers with rosettes reading "well done" and "no.1", in a small bag attached to my wall calender with a cooper trooper paper clip cause I'm that cool.
I can't be the only adult who likes a good "well done" sticker.
I use stickers on my wall calender for a little dopamine hit but also as a visual reminder that I am doing things. Actually.
It is sometimes hard to see progress during PhD and other bits of long-term work.
The picture shows January's to-do list, which reads simply: come slowly back into work, no rush - take your time and listen to your body โค๏ธ I wonder what Ill write for February...
This year I'm reminding myself that my health comes first. I'm inviting myself to slow, breathe.
I'm still working out what I need as a newly(ish) dx ND trans person. Someone who is experiencing perimenopause and seeing how this interacts with long-term health conditions that remain unnamed.
Oh and two are online!
