This is not an OAS event, but you might like to know that Northlight gallery and the Orkney News will be holding the annual Fair Saturday exhibition this year commencing on Saturday the 29th of November. Fair Saturday exists as a counterpoint to Black Friday and is a celebration of art and culture with a non-commercial emphasis.

For 2025 the theme of the exhibition is portraiture and peace activism. This event has received support from the University of Glasgow and the Arts and Humanities Research Council thanks to Law Professor Charlie Peevers. Professor Peevers is studying the history of peace activism in Scotland and will be visiting Orkney during the Portraits for Peace exhibition. While in Orkney Professor Peevers will give a talk recounting stories of peace work that connect Orkney to international law and politics (further details to follow.)

Orkney has a history of activism which includes the Orkney Woman's Suffrage Society, the anti-uranium mining protests of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Free-Winged Eagle newspaper, and more recently the regular vigils held by Orkney Friends of Palestine in response to the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.

Portraits for Peace will feature artwork by, and of, peace activists from Orkney. It includes work by the artists Carolyn Dixon, Fiona MacInnes, Susy Shearer, and Bryce Wilson. Martin Laird will also be using Northlight gallery as an open studio and inviting members of the public to watch as he paints the portraits of several local peace activists who have volunteered to sit for a few hours to have their portraits painted. There are still a couple of spaces left so, if you are an activist, or have been displaced by conflict, and want to have your portrait painted, get in touch via news@theorkneynews.scot

Portraits for Peace is free to enter and will be taking donations for Orkney Rape and Sexual Assault Service.

This is not an OAS event, but you may be interested in this forthcoming exhibition by 5 post-graduates artists. Diane Eagles, Harry Payne, Iain Davidson, Janet Tryner, and Lara Band, from the UHI MA Contemporary Art and Archaeology at Orkney College, will be showcasing their work in Wider Than Living at the Northlight Gallery, in Graham Place, Stromness. 14 to 25 November 2025 at 11am to 4pm.

An evening event, with artist talks, nibbles, and wine will be held on Thursday 20 November until 8pm.

The exhibition’s title alludes to the focus of the artists’ research into the agency of non-living materials, the overlooked and the intangible stories of objects. “We’re really excited to have the opportunity to share our work in Orkney where some of us have been studying for a number of years. Orkney is such an inspiring place, and it’s great to have the chance to share our ideas and work and highlight interdisciplinary post-graduate research.”

Each day one or more of the artists will be in the gallery to answer questions. A workshop (date to be confirmed) and activities will be available for those who want to learn more. Please note, the exhibition will be closed Friday 21 November for their graduation ceremony.
