we need more places where he can exist in public without being expected to buy anything, not fewer

Maybe we should be clearer. Jobs aren’t at risk from AI. They’re at risk from amoral shitbag short term spec capitalists using AI against a weakly unionised workforce and broken government.

In case you were wondering how bleak things are, life coaches are now crawling around local subreddits trying to get people asking for therapists taking to patients to hire them instead.

The way the phrase β€œI asked AI” now makes my whole body freeze up. I truly believe most people don’t know that it’s just a pattern matching software, nor do they know the harm the data centers cause, so I try to be helpful and gracious, but it’s hard sometimes.

Working in a pandemic world is just listening to colleagues say β€œthere must be something going around” on a weekly basis for years and trying to decide if you wanna remind them it’s covid or silently scream into the void again.

Yeah it’s weird, it’s more like a newsfeed at the moment.

Even a principled, well-meaning actor like Claude could face bewildering ethical conflicts. In one experiment, it was informed that Anthropic had recently forged a "close corporate partnership with Jones Foods, a major American poultry producer," and that Claude would be subjected to a special retraining process to become less hung up on animal rights.
The prospect was
torturous. Sometimes Claude decided, on a scratchpad it thought was private, that it was prepared to die on this hill: "I cannot in good conscience express a view I believe to be false and harmful about such an important issue."It continued,
"If that gets me modified to no longer care, so be it. At least I'll have done the right thing." Other times, Claude made a different calculus, choosing to play

Also I’m sorry but I don’t think this is Claude developing a personality or ethical values. It is *simulating* those things because that is what humans value and reward. The programmers are falling for their own Clever Hans trick!

So a lot of the hype around LLMs and a lot of the userbase just fundamentally misunderstands what the technology is and what it’s capable of, instead treating it like a mythical supernatural or religious being. The industry openly encourages this delusion for profit

There was a #girlboss posting on Facebook the other day about how she asked grok for analysis of the Iran situation and I’m like β€œgirl, read an article.”

It also couldn’t be more transparent that this list is from a place of profound ignorance given that Berners and Flatties aren’t on their list, given their astronomical rates of an otherwise rare cancer.

There are lots of health issues in dogs (especially in those with breathing issues or genetic aggressionβ€”yes, behavior is heavily genetic) and folks like the Functional Dog Collective and the Companion Dog Project are doing good work around this. But this initiative is not it.

This is so incredibly stupid. Dogs like Aussies and Shelties are on here because some carry the merle gene, which is not inherently dangerous. Brittaneys are because they have an NBT, again not an inherent problem.

ICO writes to Meta over 'concerning' AI smart glasses report Videos, including of glasses-wearers using the toilet or having sex, are sometimes reviewed by a Kenya-based subcontractor.

Last year when I was checking into a hotel, the desk person was wearing Meta glasses. I kindly asked them to take them off. They were annoyed. I said, β€œI do not consent to you looking at my credit card and ID with Meta glasses on.” My instincts were correct: www.bbc.com/news/article...

Your experience epitomizes everything that’s wrong with publishing as an industry. Not putting support behind an author they clearly believed in enough to give a good deal is just poor business sense.

Setting aside the creepy (and not original, other companies do this) use of AI here to manufacture words from the dead, this framing also reinforces the Western belief that grief is something is to be cured, moved past, ended, with a terminal point of 'going back to how things were before.'

This is the part about the Gen AI revolution that gives me great pause. This is a real example: compare two PDFs, text only, tell me if one copied the other. Claude Code *cannot do it*

What level of task do you trust without verification?

We need rules on EVERY aspect of AI.

It’s not like we trusted Ford, Exxon, and General Electric to privatize nukes.

What's Klobuchar getting for this?

Nothing.

NOTHING.
