I've linked dieselshot's itch above: I think ChangedStars is a great place to start. I recommend it. Maybe you've got another one in mind. But I challenge you to build some momentum for authors, designers and artists who've put their stress and sweat and soul into these games. It'll be good.

"Mara why are you saying this" well, because I think you should give these heartbreaking investments a chance. And I don't mean a 'pity chance', I mean a real, honest try. I've found a lot of joy in them. This is my challenge: buy a game from someone, ideally for your group, and run a miniseries.

Because that's the thing, isn't it? There's only so much time in the day. You're competing with not only peoples' favorite, but also with peoples' comfort zones. When a campaign finally wraps up, it's so much easier to just reach out for "well it's not as good but my group KNOWS this one", yeah?

The system also doesn't lend itself to fantasy-action superheroics; this isn't Traveller, characters have special abilities beyond just their skills and stats, but it's very grounded in the world the dieselshot team has built. I like it a whole lot... and that's part of the heartbreak.

ChangedStars is about as far away from a lot of convenient entry-points to modern TTRPGs as you can get. This is a hard sci-fi game in a hobby that leans more towards laser-swords and space-sorcery than having to pay the rent on the spacefreighter you're holding together with spit and baling wire.

Making a TTRPG is a heartbreaker. This is true even at the base level of "rules-light vibey zine flavor of the month" and only gets more heartbreaking as you scale up, especially as you leave common favorite settings behind and get further away from fantasy dungeoncrawling. It takes a lot from you.

Largely agreed. There's a few artists that I trust to tell me what the game is About because I know they will back it up, but in general, if a game is About something, I should be able to tell by Doing the game!

Space combat, diverse character build options, a weighty system where you push your luck and deal with mounting consequences but can still pull out the show stopper to make a difference—ChangedStars is a gem I am very proud to have made with @spiderqueenlong.bsky.social and worth it for art alone!

I have been in some incredibly niche non-choreographed situations where there's a small advantage but by and large even in those situations I would have been better off "not having a second sword at all"

So my personal experience indicates "no, not really"
