yeah, they just became trash pits.

we have this reputation as a β€œclean” city and Streets/San works hard, but the littering is really out of control

minneapolis has much bigger bones, there’s way more neighborhoods to put new midrise housing or loft conversions

also way fewer techbros looking for that highrise, pool deck lifestyle.

Comprehensive Zoning Reform in Minneapolis, MN Over the last few decades, Minneapolis failed to build enough housing to support population growth, resulting in unaffordable housing prices.

what β€œpro-growth” policies is he looking for?

you mean the vehicle with a metric fuckton of unsold inventory? yeah i’m sure elon is loving this.

whatever, i’d rather make progress on saving the planet even if it means he gets a W and i have to look at more of those awful things

i think this war is gonna be the tipping point that convinces red-blooded Americans on EVs.

back in the 70s, the only hack for gas prices was to buy a tiny japanese car. nowadays you can still do that (kinda) but you could also get a nice big luxurious EV. a hummer, even!

the north side is approaching coastal levels of insane.

which is bad news for gentrifying areas seeking some stability.

yeah it was super competitive before, but m interest rates coming down has opened the floodgates.

meanwhile existing owners don’t want to trade up or trade down given all the uncertainty in the world, and builders are all on the sidelines since construction costs are *astronomical*.

that’s what the 11mph grace is for!

also hoping the cameras can rack up truck violations (and for gods sake put up better signage)

08.03.2026 05:15 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

engineering wise, i’m not sure all of LSD can even safely support 55mph. raising the speed limit could open up IDOT to liability.

narrow lanes, no shoulders, tight horiz/vertical curves, lots of deadly fixed objects (big trees etc).

it’s not *deficient* but nor is it up to interstate standards

08.03.2026 05:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

maybe, but i’d rather not hard-code the speed limits on DLSD into law.

you can increase the labor pool (immigration) or bring down the cost of materials (tariffs, logging restrictions, etc). you can address building codes, stormwater/environmental regs, impact fees. you can revise the tax code.

how do you know they were cost effective?

seems like the livermore underpasses may have been built before (or while) the area urbanized, whereas the peninsula stuff is going in mature areas.

you’re right, but blackrock is a meme now, i don’t make the rules.

i think federal pre-emption of zoning is maybe a step too far, but there’s a meaningful carrot and stick approach. plus important provisions for manufactured housing, ADUs & financing thereof, pre-approved housing designs, etc

08.03.2026 04:07 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

did blackrock write this piece?

this is missing the forest for the trees, narrowly focused on build-to-rent restrictions to the exclusion of, well, the other 95% of the bill.

ah so kunstler never really wanted vibrant walkable cities, he just wanted to live in a norman rockwell painting. got it.

like most suburbs, I’m sure Oak Brook hates adding housing.

they’d much rather have an ugly retail box that throws off sales tax receipts instead of new residents who demand services. even schaumburg won’t approve housing these days.

the article is misleading. inland is moving *into* Highland Landmark, the office complex in the picture, while their old, outdated buildings (not pictured) will be torn down.

i am aware of these in europe of course and they are great.

but i’m skeptical that the economics will work in the US with greatly reduced labor efficiency, basically zero public subsidy, etc.
