good to see this is a thing in Blender, in Modo you just select the 3 verts and press p to create a face there, I use that to fill holes all the time

Update: the neck exploded while I was trying to hollow it out. It decided it didn't want to be a weird little vase, what it actually wants to be is a weird little jar.

gotta love those panel clamps, I have a couple sets of them but installed them on unistrut (steel u-channel)

do you have anything that will encourage fox spirits to come to my shop and help me build stuff out of wood - if they can do some light blacksmith work that would be good too but I would have to get a forge so I dunno if that's in the cards

Putting one of those DIY minisplits in my shop was the best decision I ever made. Wearing long johns and freezing my little toes off to do a bit of lathe in 13 degrees isn’t a good time. Hopefully you have a space heater pointed directly at you at least!

Mostly it's who was an abusive, belligerent drunk who pissed all over the paintings. (spoiler: all of them)

I am a slack jawed yokel and all of my art history knowledge comes via osmosis from my wife (art ed and museum background).

Progress on the Japanese-style laminated knives. 5 different species of wood used here - ironwood, manzanita, walnut, ribbonwood, and boxelder (maple). Putting a wooden knife into a sharpening jig has to be one of the goofiest things I've ever done

Update on this guy with the first coat of oil on. I decided to do a single bevel aka chisel edge on this one. I’m not happy with the edge yet - it’s chipping out a bit when I sharpen it, so I may need to adjust the angle. The next one will have a double bevel.

Yeah I cut straight slots, my assortment of chisels is always changing so I wanted to make it generic - the spacing is even and all the slots are the same size. I put leather strips on the bottom row to keep them from wiggling around, I need to do the same for the top.

Good stuff! I went with a similar design, but added a taper since most of my chisels have a tapered ferule.

Handles will be all wood too, though I'll mimic that style and use walnut where the metal is

28.11.2024 01:59 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Same! I'm hoping I can hone it to a point where I can make a clean slice in a piece of paper. I found some guys making these on Youtube that were able to cut cucumbers and things like that so I think a somewhat functional edge should be possible.

I've laminated some thin pieces of ironwood and manzanita to create my own plywood, mimicking how hard and soft steel is used to forge Japanese knives. When I shape the bevel you'll be able to see the inner layer better.

I'm attempting to make some knives entirely out of wood. I'm using super hard, tight-grained wood as an experiment to see how sharp of an edge I can get. Of course, it won't stay sharp like metal but it should be a fun experiment. The first set will be Japanese style with separate handles.

He's a good lad. I've gotten the best photos when he's having a midday nap - he's half awake, docile, and just kind of goofs around for a bit.

Animal dander is in the air you breathe. You can’t wash it out of your lungs. People with severe pet allergies generally don't build immunity through exposure to the allergen, if you do, you likely have mild allergies.

The boxelder came from this section of the root, I dug out as much as I could and got in there with a chainsaw with a carbide chain. This section had the best figure of the tree, if I had the means to pull the root ball out I would have but it was too big for me to manage.

Not a root ball per se but the previous owner left a bunch of Russian olive logs on the property, some had really nice burl and I got a few great blanks from that. Alder probably turns nicely, cedar might be a bit tricky due to how soft it is.

I wasn't sure if I should try to fill all the voids in this one with epoxy or leave it all natural. Going to go natural, hopefully, it's strong enough to survive the hollowing with these holes and cracks
