This was a missed chance for city officials to acknowledge how they have helped create the “homeless” problem. This woman knew she could reject the housing alternatives offered to her. As for the “full investigation,” it should have included the woman’s name. Maybe a reader would’ve recognized her.

What makes tragedies like this possible in the first place, is no accountability from the very beginning. Excuses on top of excuses enable more of the same behavior.

All of our presidents — whatever their party — have at times pursued policies that got people killed. It’s a fact of political life. At least in America, citizens can publicly disagree and even sue. In other countries, say Guatemala, it’s put up or shut up (or move to America).

Could it be that some “mentally ill” people aren’t just “vulnerable.” They are also manipulative. This woman knew just what to say: She suffered from autism and “trauma from police violence.” She knew whom to take advantage of. This woman needs a civil commitment -- and a name.

How small is @oregonian? So small it feels threatened by independent journalists who were on the scene at ICE all summer while their reporters hid. C.K. Bouferrache was assaulted at least twice. The O barely took notice.

Speech doesn’t upset me. Vandalism, assaults, theft, robbery, disturbing the peace — that’s what upsets me outside the ICE facility. If the protests were peaceful, the building wouldn’t be boarded up. Employees wouldn’t be harassed leaving and arriving at work.
