The thing that is bugging me the most about the pierogi discourse is people saying "a pierogi"

Pierogi is plural folks

INTRODUCTION

There is no doubt that past and present events do shape those of the future.

This observation is true for both our individual lives, as well as for the all-important controversy in which the life of our universe is involved the irreconcilable conflict between light and darkness, righteousness and sin, right and wrong, and life and death.

Dear historians:

If your book comes through my production department with AI, and it creates any extra work or expense for my team (e.g., the CE has to double-check all the citations because they're AI bullshit), I will personally cancel your fucking book.

Off the schedule. Gone.

My first semester teaching, I assigned the Penguin Classics Dante's Inferno with a summary at the start of every canto. Not a single student turned in a paper with a reference to the text. It was all from the summary. If we're already having a hard time getting students to read, how will this help?

A photo taken through the window of a train. The name of the station "Newton for Hyde" can be seen on a sign. Inside the train a piece of paper is held up to the window with a sketch of a bewigged gentleman holding up a sign saying "Leibnitz for Jekyll"

Nerdy joke warning. 😁 I've been planning this since I first saw the Newton for Hyde sign.

So much this. The point of an assignment isn’t the assignment, it’s the process to generate the output.

Confusing product with process only hurts students.

I'm so tired of hearing that we need to "teach our students how to use AI" when the thing they most need to use it is a critical-thinking skill set that can only be acquired by NOT using it. I'm tired of hearing that it's inevitable. I'm tired.

looked up the clip just because sometimes people change his words for captions that end up innocently reshared, but upon finding it decided to share the video because hearing him say it makes it 1000% more definitely true and everyone will listen/believe more than reading it written out

How knitting may be rewiring your brain β€œGrandma hobbies” like knitting are making a comeback among Gen Zβ€”but it’s not just for nostalgia. Neuroscience shows these tactile pastimes may help preserve brain health as we age.

Got yarn?

The research in this article can help you justify that stash as being just one part of a brain-saving hobby.

Now, to figure out what to use it for!

Reminds me of the time when I was a TA. A student was upset about the prof's attendance policy, so she lied and complained, saying the prof had praised Hitler in class.

Her lies were investigated, proven false, & she transferred. How will the truthfulness of these evals be determined?

Thinking about this so much in the current landscape, plus I’m revisiting Stefan Collini’s What Are Universities For? and yeah, I believe the value of a university education, especially undergrad, comes from deep engagement with many subjects to develop curiosity and critical thinking.

Spent 40m today reading a kid’s essay and writing to her about it. The takeaway won’t be better writingβ€”it’ll be that someone who cares about her thinks she’s on the right track. Everyone who thinks they’re smart thinks so because someone took time w their work and told them so.

ChatGPT identified something I wrote last year as being by John Milton: gave work, line numbers and several subsequent (but entirely hallucinated) lines.
Today, putting those hallucinated lines into Google’s AI, it confidently identifies them as by John Milton.
