Do some people resonate with these portrayals? Maybe, probably depends on the trope. Does it still reinforce existing negative societal biases? Yes. Fictional characters arent judged the same way as real people, as real people aren’t representation but fictional characters can be.

And it’s like why do people use ‘I can write whatever I want’ to deflect these criticisms? Like yeah I do believe you can write whatever you want, but other people, shockingly, can also write whatever they want and sometimes they want to write a critical analysis of what you wrote

And how these things not only reflect but also reinforce harmful ideas about black gender identities and contributes to their continued dehumanization (I’m mostly paraphrasing the post, though I do agree with it 100%)

Like I remember seeing a post where it was discussing anti-black racism and talking about how *in fiction*, the woman is always lighter, or how the lightest one is almost always the most feminine, about how masculine and violent people are usually darker, etc.

And creators must realize that people are not always gonna have strictly positive thoughts about what you make. And that sometimes when you make something, you could be expressing a bias you didn’t even realize you had.

Actually I was thinking about it and more people need to be comfortable with the idea that whenever you read see or otherwise interact with something, you’re gonna have thoughts and feelings about it and that’s pretty normal and should even be encouraged
