Lake Tahoe capsize: Deadly weather brought fierce winds, temperature plunge The first day of summer in Lake Tahoe was filled with winterlike weather as a cold front whipped up strong winds, damaging waves and even dropped snow.

A cold front pushed across Lake Tahoe on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a sudden wind shift, gusts up to 45 mph and a mix of rain and snow. Downburst winds were likely stronger.

Jim "oak man" Crouch recently distributed the last of the more than 2,000 Englemann oak seedlings he grew from acorns starting last fall. He raised the young trees in his Escondido back yard. He hopes volunteers can help multiply his oak-spreading efforts next year. tinyurl.com/yc532zje #trees

Jacaranda trees (Jacaranda mimosifolia) seem to bloom about a month later in North County than in downtown Sand Diego, where they put on a show each spring. The tree pictured is in Escondido, and the photos were taken today. The tree is a native of South America. #trees

A ponderosa pine on a ridgetop in Idaho. A spike branch is visible halfway up, evidence of some event that killed the top; a new crown grew beside it.

Lower bole of the same tree, viewed from another angle. It is unusual for ponderosa pines to have that much decay. Possible causes: Fire damage, lightning, or another tree falling against it and scraping away the bark.

Today's forestry pics. Some trees lead a rough life, but they enjoy the benefit of a long life because loggers won't touch them. This ponderosa pine in Idaho is a good example. Top was broken out at one point, and one side of the trunk has rotted.

In 2016 researchers from the Centre for Ecological Research in Hungary pointed laser scanners at two birch trees, one in Austria & one in Finland. Between two hours after sunset and just before sunrise, the trees branches drooped by as much as 10cm🌳
