CFP for Mini-Conference: Health Professions Education

Theme: Transforming and Repairing Health Professions Education

In a national context where U.S. healthcare practice, research, education, and programming face increased constraints due to conservative political ideology and neoliberal fiscal policy, health practitioners, educators, and researchers find new areas of struggle and resistance. How are healthcare professionals surviving the current political context regarding cuts to HIV prevention, legislative attacks to gender affirming healthcare, anti-vaccine rhetoric, and ICE presence? What are impacts of the transformation of the American institution of healthcare, including the incorporation of AI, private equity, and other macro-level changes on how healthcare professionals go about their daily work, understand their professional lives, and plan their forms of resistance? How can researchers support the spillover effects of U.S. policies into international contexts and interrelated struggles?

Papers of Interest:

We are interested in papers with empirical foci on how health professionals conceptualize and experience constraints and struggles, engage in organized or informal acts of resistance, transform their approaches utilizing social science and humanities, and navigate constrained professional contexts. In addition to welcoming traditional research presentations, we are also very interested in pedagogy presentations about how scholars engage in transformation and repair in the classroom, how researchers navigate a constrained research environment, and how practitioners engage in world-making amidst interlocking struggles.

Submission Instructions:

For conference information and submission portal, visit www.essnet.org (also linked in comments). ESS abstract submission deadline is October 15, 2025.

Racial Capitalism and Black-White Health Inequities in the United States: The Case of the 2008 Financial Crisis - Reed T. DeAngelis, 2025

My new article will be out in the next issue of Journal of Health and Social Behavior. I'll be sure to post it here when it's out. In the meantime, here's a short thread and open-access link to a policy brief (tinyurl.com/yc7zxj98) 🧡 (1/8)

OK, every year I try to explain to my students how LLMs work, and every year I have to do a big trawl for good resources and activities. Here's this year's haul of *introductory* materials. (In-class activities + visualizations, not so much readings.)

Being a birder at the @philadelphiaeagles.bsky.social #SuperBowl parade is noticing the wild bald eagle flying way high over the art museum/parade route half an hour before the parade kicks off πŸ¦…

Gender is such an immutable, natural binary that we have to enforce it with the full power of the state.

This is what I wore to axe throwing this week: my watercolor Eagles crucial catch hat, kelly green Saquon Barkley jersey, and new Saquon reverse hurdle sticker on my axe. And I threw better than I’ve thrown in quite a while. GO BIRDS πŸ¦…πŸ¦…

I regret to inform you that I have become one of those people who says, β€œthere’s an episode of The West Wing about that!”

Watching that show for the first time in 2024-2025 is wiiiild

This is awful. What a horrible, preventable tragedy and a loss for UC Berkeley and our field. Privileged to have listened to him speak on Palestine just a few months ago. Thinking of Dr. Burawoy’s family, friends, colleagues, and students.

Not just the National Institutes of Health, now the National Science Foundation is put on pause.
Reminder: research is a multi-step process. Pausing the peer review panels by itself creates months of delay.
