How can a school full of the descendants of people who have fled persecution invite in a politician who attacks asylum seekers?

How can a faith school invite politicians that spread the poison of Islamophobia?

How can a school set up to provide education for immigrants invite a representative of a party founded on the demonisation of immigrants?

How can a Jewish school invite a politician who proudly shares a stage with Nigel Farage, a man who allegedly spent his school days joking about gassing Jews?

When Jewish institutions make defending Israel their central priority, they bring dangerous false allies into community spaces.

We are horrified to see that JFS School has hosted Reform politician Suella Braverman.

May we honour the memory of the dead and continue to fight for the living.

But today is also an occasion for us to remind ourselves of the meaning of "Never Again" - and to rededicate ourselves to jointly building a future where genocide becomes impossible and where the forces of racism and fascism are  extinguished from our politics.

On this day, we are pausing to remember the victims of Nazi persecution - the genocides of Jews and Roma, the mass killings of queer and disabled people and political opponents, the extermination of millions of universes.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day - the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The hunger strikers have inspired millions around the world.

Umer Khalid continues his hunger strike and the demand for urgent justice and an end to the genocide continues.

These prisoners now face a lifetime of neurological damage, heart issues and other chronic illnesses.

They will also remain in prison for many more months before they start to face trial, far beyond the 6-month legal limit for being on remand.

The hunger strikers, who have demanded better prison conditions, the deproscription of Palestine Action, & an end to UK complicity in Israel's genocide, have won major victories.

Most notably, Israeli military giant Elbit Systems has lost a £2bn contract to train the British Army for 10 years.

After 73 days of the largest and longest coordinated hunger strike in British history, Heba Muraisi, Kamran Ahmed and Lewie Chiaramello have ended their strike.

These patterns reflect a structural system of occupation and apartheid: settlement expansion, collective punishment, and militarised control fragment Palestinian society and restrict political agency. Militarisation is not exceptional: It is the logic of the occupier.

Christian Zionist organisations provide political and financial support to Israeli state and settler actors, even as Christian Palestinians and other civilians are ethnically cleansed.

The use of tear gas and chemical munitions is not exclusive to Aida: across the West Bank, Israeli forces fire tear gas canisters into residential areas during raids or settler-accompanied attacks, injuring civilians, damaging property, & contributing to a climate of fear.

Residents experience frequent military incursions, including live fire. 100% of surveyed residents reported tear‑gas exposure in the past year. Exposure is frequent and causes respiratory problems, miscarriages, psychological trauma, and other health issues.

Next to Bethlehem lies Aida Refugee Camp, one of the most militarised and tear-gas-exposed communities in the West Bank. Almost 7,000 Palestinian refugees live here, right by the Israeli separation barrier and the illegal settlements of Gilo and Har Homa.

This Christmas season, Christian Palestinians in and around Bethlehem are publicly celebrating again for the first time in two years.

But for Palestinians of all religions and none, the daily realities of occupation and apartheid are still not subsiding.

We have felt strength in each other's company, and have been welcomed with incredible hospitality by our hosts, who are shockingly strong, gentle and warm in the face of layers upon layers of trauma, dehumanisation and crushing oppression.

The idea that there are a few bad apple settlers — or that this is an issue of fringe radicals — is completely untrue. The entire state of Israel is backing this project of ethnic cleansing and murder. The western governments who do nothing to stop it are responsible too.

We have witnessed a violent arrest and lots of settler activity, but in many ways the most terrible thing is the massive structural nature of the oppression.

Since arriving in Masafer Yatta on Sunday, we have taken turns going on 'rapid response' to places where Palestinians have asked for help when facing settlers, soldiers or police.

We have also slept overnight in more remote places where locals fear regular nighttime attacks.
