I'm writing to you today to express frank horror at the state of America in general and specifically a new law being forced into effect in the state of Kansas that effectively voids the drivers licenses of transgender people in that state (https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/kansas-sends-letters-to-trans-people). America's human rights abuses have long been documented and the current downswing into proud, open fascism has been, to say the least, alarming. I am supporting my American trans friends with Gofundme donations, sharing scripts cis allies can use when calling their representatives, and trying to keep my online space welcoming and inclusive; it is endless work, and it is not enough. In the thirties, German authorities carried out the exact same sweeping laws that forced Jews, trans people, and other marginalized people to give up legal documents in favor of a government ID that flatly stated their status as Jewish, queer, and other "undesirables." It made the collection of such people into concentration camps easier for the Nazis. It was and is part of an ongoing planned genocide against marginalized people that is front and centre in every fascist playbook: isolate a scapegoat, destroy them, and move onto the next marginalized group. The hope by the fascists in power in the US is, at minimum, to scare transgender people into detransitioning. They have already demonstrated that they are willing to kill to remove visibly queer and trans people from the public eye. It will not end with government markers and it will not end with our LGBTQ+ siblings. Canada at minimum must condemn these laws and do everything within it's power to secure the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ people here at home, in the US, and abroad. What pressure will you, the NDP party, and all parties put on the US to end LGBTQ+ prejudice?
