for the beloved chinese steampunk novel 杀破狼 (sha po lang)
Gu Yun had a clear understanding of his own capabilities—the arrogant veneer of invincibility that he donned every day was merely a façade.
But at this moment, he really was under the illusion that he could do anything.
Shen Yi was of two minds: on the one hand, as a veteran of the Black Iron Battalion, he would willingly lay down his life for his marshal.
On the other, Gu Yun’s shameless boasting gave him gooseflesh—he was once again at a loss for words.
Gu Yun had just returned from leading a troop of light cavalrymen on patrol and had barely dismounted when he heard that Prince Yan had come.
Momentarily stunned, he didn't bother to remove his lightpelt armor; he threw down his warhorse's reins and took off.
Barred from entering, the little boy stood on tiptoe and clung to the windowsill, his eyes huge as he stared forlornly into the princess’s room.
Gu Shen’s heart had softened at the sight. In a moment of weakness, he brought the kid to his own quarters…only to regret the impulse almost immediately.
Before the astonished eyes of the court, Gu Yun held a sword he had drawn from a guard’s waist in one hand and pulled Prince Yan into his embrace with the other.
Chang Geng leaned into him with a muted groan as if he had lost the strength to stand.
Her words were vague, but Gu Yun understood—He had always been calm of mind and rarely suffered wu’ergu attacks, until recently.
It was because of me, Gu Yun thought, lost.
Gu Yun had thought his plans through on the way here. First, he was going to flay Liao Ran alive.
Then, he was going to catch Chang Geng and give him a proper spanking.
He thought of all the court officials who would be implicated in this incident, and of Liu Chongshan’s recommendation that he abdicate in favor of someone more worthy, and felt as though a shaft of ice had pierced his chest.

This alone was intolerable to Gu Yun.

This child—if Gu Yun was to be believed, his temperament was much like Shen Yi’s when he was younger: sensitive and apt to quietly overthink things.
Chang Geng couldn’t say he saw the resemblance. Perhaps General Shen had made a mistake in his youth hanging around with that Gu bastard all day.
Gu Yun seriously couldn’t stand the way Chang Geng was looking at him. He stood and stepped forward to meet Chang Geng, as if in compromise, and embraced him from behind.
Then, he all but dragged him back and tossed him onto the bed, tugging the now-cool sheets over him.
The boy was in the throes of a nightmare.
Is it because he’s not used to living here? Gu Yun wondered as he pressed his ice-cold fingers to Chang Geng’s wrist.
By the looks of it, Ge Chen had dug out a number of the Marquis Estate's old iron puppets that had been relegated to scrap.
Who knew how much time it had taken him to fix them all.

Aside from some streaks of silver at his temples, he’d scarcely changed after all these years.
It was clear he had been very well taken care of indeed.
An earnest attempt to play was exactly what Chang Geng most feared.
He strode over and wrapped his arms around Gu Yun, pulling him off his perch atop the railing.
He leaned close to his ear and murmured, “Save your mouth for other things.”
Just seeing him lifted Gu Yun’s spirits.

There was no way Marshal Gu, Master of Romance, would say something so absurd as I’m thinking about my dad while lying in bed with his lover.
Gu Yun had been born with an overprotective nature.
If he were to take personal attachments out of the equation and operate on pure feeling, perhaps the quality that moved him most powerfully was vulnerability.
“What? That year I didn’t want to go out on New Year’s Eve because of all the people, didn’t you haul me outside in front of everyone just like this?”
“So,” Gu Yun said expressionlessly, “having experienced a reversal of fortune, you’re all lining up to get revenge on me today?”

He had yet to remove his armor, and as he crashed down with a clang, half of his body went numb and the ceiling spun above his head. Gu Yun suspected he might never be able to get up again.

He was interrupted by the entrance of a figure in a conical bamboo hat.
Shen Yi fell silent.
Chang Geng was exhausted in body and mind.
At the mention of Gu Yun, he grumbled to himself a few times before resolutely summoning the energy to call out, “Uncle Wang, it’s all right. If I’m hungry, I’ll go fetch some late-night snacks myself later this evening. Don’t mind me.”
