While assuming a seemingly neutral stance, as the largest archaeological organisation operating in the region, the American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) continues to welcome, host, platform and partner with archaeologists who are knowingly participating in (or normalising) war crimes. This includes archaeologists who have participated in Israel’s Gaza genocide, and those working in illegal settlement universities.

By intentionally welcoming numerous participants working at illegal settlement based institutions, ASOR is in breach of the legal obligation triggered by the July 2024 ICJ ruling, not to recognise, aid or assist in maintaining Israel's illegal military presence in the occupied Palestinian territories. The American Society of Overseas Research is undoubtedly the most deeply, cynically, complicit in Israel's ongoing war crimes.

During their prolonged displacement, Nadia and Ahmad’s spent three days, from 28 to 30 January 2024, in a classroom at al-Azhar University in Gaza City, where they and their families were imprisoned, and individuals among them were tortured, humiliated, and even physically mutilated by Israeli forces.  The families were grouped together with dozens of others in the university. Men, women, and children were separated; the men were searched, beaten, and tortured, while the women and children were detained nearby, within earshot of the sounds of torture. During days of torture and abuse, an Israeli soldier carved a Star of David into Ahmad’s back with a knife. Another soldier carved a smiley face into Nadia’s father’s neck.
