That's true to an extent - it'll really depend on your future research/teaching load. That said, anecdotally, I actually know of a successful STEM academic irl who writes sci-fi novels alongside their academic career :) so it can definitely be done even alongside demanding workloads!

Also sorry I clearly can't stop talking about this but I really love seeing beautiful prose from academics in their scholarly work. There are some v. well-written historical works out there: Helen MacDonald's Possessing the Dead & Inga Clendinnen's Dancing With Strangers for your reading pleasure:

Either way, it's not a zero sum game. Going into academia doesn't mean you have to give up writing & vice versa - though I'd say it's probably a bit more financially sound to get a university position first & then use your free time to write 😂

- say that history is one of those wonderful areas of study where you can really tap into your love for creative writing & bring it out in scholarly work. There are some very beautiful written academic works out there, so that's another avenue you can explore :)

Oh I definitely mean creative writing! There are plenty of successful novelists who are/were also academics - Deborah Harkness (historian), Ali Hazelwood (neuroscience) etc. Tolkien and CS Lewis were also scholars! Ngl I have a lot of thoughts about the art of historical writing but I'll just-
