Spotted a wild pileated woodpecker hard at work! 🌲 With that bold red crest and powerful chisel-like bill, this forest icon can excavate massive holes in search of carpenter ants and beetle larvae. Bonus? The cavities they create often become cozy homes for other critters too!

It's our final weekend of Kids 'n' Critters, where up to two kids get in FREE per paying adult (at the ticket window). Explore the trails, meet amazing animals, and let the kids burn off energy at Kids’ Trek while learning about wildlife along the way! 🦦🌲🐻

Our newest barn owl, Alba, is already settling in nicely with our resident owl, Təklus. The pair is getting comfortable in their habitat and we’re loving watching their early interactions as they get to know each other. 🦉

Last month, our dedicated volunteers cleared invasive plants around Toad Pond, one of the few known western toad breeding sites in Pierce County.

Western toads are a Candidate for listing as Endangered in Washington, and habitat restoration is key to their future.

Salish the rescued bald eagle is serving full winter fluff mode. 🦅 When eagles “poof” up like this, they’re not just being dramatic, they’re staying warm. By fluffing their feathers, they trap pockets of air close to their bodies, creating natural insulation.

Our PNW animal all-stars are getting in on the Seahawks Super Bowl hype! 🏈 These native Northwest animals showed us how to shuffle, sniff, and score with some special Seahawks enrichment before the big game. 💚💙

We are dedicated to wildlife conservation, and our wood duck nest box project is making a real impact! Last month, our staff cleaned, repaired, and installed nest boxes across the Free-Roaming Area, providing essential nesting sites for wood ducks and other species. 🦆

Hudson the beaver was very interested in this cookie box. Inside? Not cookies, but a beaver-approved snack spread of fresh lettuce, veggies, and herbivore biscuits, perfect for encouraging natural foraging behavior. 🦫🌿

And yes, the human cookies were responsibly handled by keepers.🍪

Meet Klahhane, our mountain goat leader! He may not be the biggest goat in the herd, but keepers say he’s the calm, confident personality everyone naturally follows. Klahhane is named after Klahhane Ridge, the same area from which he and other goats were translocated as part of a conservation effort

Meet Alba, our newest feathered resident! The beautiful barn owl is settling in and already navigating his habitat with growing confidence. Alba has completed a full wellness exam with our veterinary team, and with a clean bill of health, he’s officially ready to meet guests! 🦉

Tanner, the rescued bobcat, is having fun with a stick!

Tanner was brought to Northwest Trek from a wildlife rehab center in 2012. Tanner is a playful bobcat and enjoys spending time with his rescued bobcat buddy, Tahoma. Like most cats, if he doesn’t want to do something, he won’t.

Happy #NationalBirdDay! 🦉 Meet our 8-year-old stunning snowy owls, Taiga and Tundra. Tundra (male-right) is bright white, while Taiga (female-left) shows beautiful dark bars and spots. Same species, stunningly different feathers!

Our rescued American marten is settling into her forever home and wasting no time exploring. Curious and quick, Syaʔyaʔ is enjoying enrichment made just for her, rose hips tucked into a wreath and blueberries hidden in a tree to encourage natural foraging and problem-solving. ❤️
