It completely fucked my sense of indie gaming because I couldn’t see what the big deal about Braid was when Cave Story had a more ambitious story and more interesting gameplay for me.

I think it depends, some things they can learn themselves (“this card is dead weight in 90% of situations with your current deck”) but others are better to teach since they’re hard to learn without dozens of hours of experience (playing to win vs playing to not lose)

I am often humbled because I’ve spent years learning analytics only to be completely dismantled by the comedian who has been an expert for all of 15 minutes

I guess this is an old man rant stemming from “the more I know the less I know” as I keep exploring more and more topics in depth.

It’s more generally a problem with stuff that seems accessible like moral criticism or economic analysis but these are genuinely difficult topics and mere casual engagement with the ideas isn’t enough to warrant making takes on it. I use my liver daily but it doesn’t mean I understand how it works.

YouTube video essayists mostly optimize towards the aesthetic of knowledge rather than engaging with it. The algorithm rewards takes that seem true regardless of whether they are. Sometimes these align, like if they have a legitimate background in the topic, but often they do not.

I’m of the opinion that while no one person is obligated to do this work, SOMEONE has to.

I frequently do it myself. Can’t change minds if you decide they’re unreachable, I think.

It's just an unimaginable scale of a project and a testament to our commitment to beauty and creating awe. There's so many of these giga-projects in human history and each one humbles me when I think of how many generations of people it took to build it.

Sometimes I think about how people really spent 200 years building Notre Dame. It's pushing the "a society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit" to the extreme. There's like... ten generations between the people who laid the foundation and the first attendees

Literally nothing compares to being 11 years old, recognizing braille and looking online for how to read it, transcribing it, and solving the regis puzzle.

I’ve never gotten a puzzle that has made me that satisfied with the solution since and I’ve been chasing it for years
