On October 12, Houla-born Tarek Mazraani received video footage from friends and relatives of a drone hovering above his area, repeating in a flat, robotic voice:

“The architect Tarek Mazraani continues his conspiracies. Chase him. Expel him so security returns and reconstruction can take place.”

On November 19, Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee posted a map claiming Hezbollah was rebuilding military infrastructure inside Beit Lif.

A resident said many houses marked had already been destroyed by Israel. Nonetheless, Beit Lif residents weighed the prospect of another displacement.

In Kfarshouba, Israeli forces occupy the high ground while the village sits below, exposed. From two military posts on the surrounding peaks, Israeli forces surveil and harass residents with drones and sporadic gunfire.

On Nov. 18, 2025, Haitham el-Masri's vehicle was struck by an Israeli drone, killing him instantly. El-Masri had just left the home of his friend, Hisham Hassan, after fixing his internet.

Hisham had been the last to speak with el-Masri on the phone.

Israel Killed Issam Abdallah but Cannot Kill the Story Two Israeli airstrikes targeted seven journalists reporting from southern Lebanon on Friday, October 13 shortly after 6:00 p.m. The first airstrike killed Issam Abdallah instantly. He was 37.

The renewed campaign for justice comes after Israel claimed it closed an investigation into its own attack without releasing information.

Last week, the Committee to Protect Journalists (@pressfreedom.bsky.social), Amnesty International (@amnesty.org), & 3 U.S. lawmakers urged accountability for Israel’s Oct. 13, 2023 strike in south Lebanon that killed Issam Abdallah, critically injured Christina Assi, & wounded 5 other journalists.

The story of Lebanon’s seven lost villages is one of colonial greed & forced displacement. From Tarbikha to Salha, generations of families were stripped of citizenship, land, & identity.

Attaining food sovereignty will eventually necessitate breaking out of the monopolization of corporate food and seed production — as well as the customs of work and treatment between and among farmers, brought about by conventional agriculture.

Additionally, farmers often decide what to plant based on what they can sell, and sales rest on the arbitrary prices decided by middlemen with access to the wholesale market.

Realizing a resilient, intersectional food sovereignty movement in Lebanon is not without its challenges:
(1) Initiatives depend on Western NGO funding.
(2) Farmers depend on subsidized imports.
(3) & they are at a financial loss, having to use foreign currency to purchase seeds.

In contrast, heirloom seeds are open-pollinated and reproducible… Taking seeds out of the hands of proprietary business and putting them into the hands of everyday farmers is a fundamental pillar of food sovereignty.

Bullet points: Because F1 hybrid seeds are made to produce only one yield, they are not appropriate for seed saving. Corporations have patented seeds so that farmers are not legally allowed to replant seeds containing “proprietary” genetic material. Corporations often also contractually prevent farmers who are their customers from saving, sharing, and selling seeds. Farmers must re-buy seeds from these corporate seed monopolies every planting season, trapping them in a cycle of dependency.

F1 hybrid seeds are artificially bred and produced by four main conglomerates, while up to 90 percent of industrial grain is produced by another four conglomerates.

The global market for commercial agriculture is dominated by genetically-modified and F1 hybrid seeds, or seeds that have been selectively bred.

“[These corporations] control food production through seed production,” says Serge Harfouche, a member of Buzuruna Juzuruna.

“Seed sovereignty” is a set of practices that involve reclaiming seeds as a commons and public good, allowing farmers the right to breed, exchange, and save seeds that are not patented, genetically modified, or controlled by corporate monopolies.
