We ask top designers how to make board games about the worst parts of human history Board game designers Cole Wehrle and Amabel Holland talk about designing distressing historical games - and whether to make them at all.

A long read from me today, about the delicate task of designing respectful historical board games. Massive thanks to @amabel.bsky.social and @colewehrle.bsky.social for talking to me about their design approaches. www.wargamer.com/board-games/...

I think Borthwick might be cooked. This is too talented a squad to be fighting to avoid the wooden spoon.

Drone strikes on Amazon Web Services facilities this week in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain highlight the vulnerability of cloud facilities β€” prominent symbols of US tech power in the region and hard to defend against air attack.

Fars News Agency, an outlet affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said on Thursday that Iran targeted Amazon and Microsoft facilities in recent drone strikes.

Experts say Amazon’s facilities were likely targeted by Iran. Microsoft said it had not experienced any outages in the region.

The strikes mark what is believed to be the world’s first military attack against the US β€œhyperscalers” that dominate the global cloud computing market.

That could create a chilling effect on the UAE and Saudi Arabia’s plans to spend billions of dollars on local AI infrastructure in the coming years, a crucial plank of the oil-rich states’ efforts to diversify their economies.

β€œThe Iranians view data centres as part of the conflict,” said Matt Pearl, a director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think-tank.

The whole reason I bought this sweet reproduction of a 18th century map of Taiwan at the National Palace Museum is bc it's almost a ship's eye view. It's huge too, like 9ft/3m when fully unfolded.

POV: You're in a landing craft trying to figure out where you can land and not be immediately killed.

It's been a week of war in Iran. Where are we?

-The US & Israel have accumulated tactical successes. The Islamic Repubic is not on the verge of collapse, but it is much weaker.

-Again: how to translate this into sustainable strategic success is at best uncertain.

Correction. Orwell never said this. He did however, warn that: "political language... is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.” (That's Politics and the English Language, one of my favorite essays)

Meta has a history of torturing their moderators and providing NOTHING in the way of mental health care. How do I know? Because I used to be a moderator for Meta and I got a $3,500 settlement for the PTSD they gave me.

When we tried to unionize, they moved their moderation to the Philippines.

My thing with Hegseth is that he wants you to think he was a scary, war-criming, door-kicker when he was actually a Minnesota National Guardsman assigned to the 101st Airborne Division as a replacement in Iraq, then quickly pulled from the line and shuffled off to a Civil Affairs unit mid-tour.

An undamaged radar of the same model

Its unclear how extensive the damage is. The other two faces may still be operational depending on how messed up the interior is. Maybe a future image will capture the damaged face!

Damage to this EW site has likely complicated missile defense efforts for other areas in the Gulf

You cannot do blanket coverage by fiat. DFC can underwrite risk insurance but will need to be on a carrier by carrier basis and will come with a risk subsidy calculation.

No serious shipper will take β€œtrust me bro, this is legal” when they’ve got crews and hundreds of millions in cargo endangered.
