On the way home from Norfolk I stopped to photograph the Elveden war memorial.

Its siting at the meeting point of three parishes was central to its function as a memorial. Though with the widening of the A12 its grandeur in the landscape is now difficult to capture. #ww1 #memorial

IT MUST’VE BEEN HERE SOMEWHERE

Two veterans of the Great War, one the writer R. H. Mottram, look for the place of their memories on the old Western Front.

DUNSLAND, 17TH NOVEMBER 1967

The great house of Dunsland in North Devon consumed by flames just days after the celebrations were held to mark its complete restoration.

I have spent the last month or so researching and creating this large scale piece showing the November night in 1967 that Dunsland was consumed by fire.

Today I took the completed piece to the terrace in the landscape where the old house once stood.

There’s plenty to find, Dunsland’s story features in a number of books. It is a tragic story, and the loss still sits heavily on the land there.

A detail from a work in progress. It’s my largest collage piece to date and is inspired by a place I’ve wanted to paint for many years.

I’m also delighted to announce an exhibition to mark the 235th anniversary of the death of the almost entirely forgotten architect John Meadows. He was the architect of a number of lost houses in Devon and elsewhere, the exhibition will bring some of those places to life again. #art #architecture

I am delighted to announce that my new works will soon be available from the Churchgate Gallery in Porlock, Somerset.

Given that so much of my work focuses on our ancient churches and other buildings of curiosity, I could not think of a more apt location than this wonderful gallery. #art #fineart

One of the things I love most about Arlington is the mists. This morning’s chilly start had the valleys draped in white.

Working up the layers on a new piece. This is a piece I have been mulling over in one way, shape or form for about five years, but didn’t have the creative outlet to capture the image in my mind. Hopefully in the next few days I’ll, at last, be able to look upon the completed work. #art

Hobart’s Mausoleum, Blickling, Norfolk

As a child I was taken to walk on the Blickling estate many, many times. In retrospect, I think this place has played a formative role in the things in life I find aesthetically pleasing and intriguing.

I’m very pleased to hear it. Yes, the layering of texture and the tension that collage creates in the piece are some of the reasons I enjoy working in this way.

This work from September marks a transition point. The process of painting one specific passage inspired an epiphany that changed my artistic direction.

Yes, I’ve always found it quite haunting. I think I first saw it in the museum at Albert, it used to be played at the end of the visitor route (may still be).

Yes, quite possibly. It is one of the great tragedies of the Great War that we will never know what his art would have become. But, perhaps that unknown is part of Butterworth’s greatness.
