On Read Across America Day, I’m proud of the work we’ve done through SB 321 (2023) to connect California students with local libraries and literacy resources.

#ReadAcrossAmericaDay – originally started in 1998 as a way to encourage children to read – helps set kids across California on the pathway to literacy, beginning with story time in the classroom. What book will you read? What was your favorite book as a child?

Today, on Japanese Internment Day of  Remembrance, I want to honor the bravery and sacrifice of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. A unit formed nearly entirely of Nisei, second-generation Japanese Americans from Hawaii and internment camps across the mainland.

During WWII, 120,000 Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps. Today – and always – we recognize the lasting impact on the #JapaneseAmerican community & commit to continue fighting against injustice.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson, whose life and leadership shaped our nation’s ongoing journey toward equality. He was a voice for the voiceless, an advocate for those too often left out, and a servant to the oppressed worldwide.

400 students from Natomas schools met up on a busy corner in their neighborhood to defiantly stand up for their friends, family, and neighbors.

Today we celebrate Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. #FredKorematsu was a #JapaneseAmerican civil rights activist who resisted the internment of Japanese Americans during #WWII and was detained by the U.S. government because of his Japanese roots.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day honors six million Jewish lives stolen in the Holocaust and millions more targeted by Nazi hatred. By remembering those lives lost, we reject antisemitism, racism and all bigotry, and commit to defending truth, human dignity, and democracy everywhere!

Today we remember the millions of lives lost during the #Holocaust, including six million Jews, 250,000 people w/ disabilities, 250,000 Romani people, nearly 2,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses, & hundreds – possibly thousands – of LGBTQ+ individuals. #CALeg #CASenateDems
