Yeah it def tastes gross, which is reason enough to avoid it imo. I think there really could be something interesting there in terms of the acetylated analogs, but it’s unfortunate that it’s getting blown up by this kind of article. That makes it tough to discuss without tempers going up

I’d hesitate to draw any life changing conclusions from this paper, though. It’s suggestive to be sure, and dropping an artificial sweetener from your diet probably wont hurt, but I think it needs a bit more rigorous work to be conclusive, especially the S6A-microbiome link.

The TEER analysis was also strange, the concentrations for the analog were super high (10 mM S6A is almost 4g/L, which is like 700x the amount you’d find in a beverage). The genotoxicity part was interesting

I read the actual paper the article cites. It’s not a super great paper. It’s listed as a review but contains original research? Weird to me but maybe a quirk of the journal. There’s a bunch of experiments that are all over the place in quality. The rnaseq in particular made me raise my eyebrows

And had been on a 20 submersible expedition out to Titanic the previous year with the 21 Russians. And that was organized by a Canadian company that was 22 doing an IMAX film which was released under the title Titanica.

Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."
