11.02.2025 23:55 — 👍 6 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 1Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out.
Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation.
Say equity, which a just society should pursue.
Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.
Finally, end your story with the beginning. Draw it back to the context, the problem and the metaphor. Be sure to talk about future research directions and what issues still remain to be solved.
10.02.2025 03:52 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0When you review your findings, first, reiterate the problem you are trying to address & how your findings can be applied. Now when you tell me your findings, my mind is already following your map and making connections about what the findings mean in the real world!
10.02.2025 03:52 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0Engage with your audience. Although you don't always need to do this, it sure helps keep my attention if you ask me questions. Even a rhetorical question is good, because it gets people actively thinking!
10.02.2025 03:52 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Remember that metaphor you used earlier? When you "drew a map for my mind"? We're midway through & I need you to remind me of that metaphor & how it relates to what you are talking about now. You the - presenter - are my compass, make sure I'm still on route!

10.02.2025 03:52 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Don't use acronyms or jargon unless you explain them. Or if you can avoid them altogether, that's even better! You know your field, but I'm completely lost if I don't understand the language....
10.02.2025 03:47 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0See all those dot points & words on your slide? DELETE THEM. I'll be real with you. I'm not reading your slide, especially if you are speaking at the same time. And YOU shouldn't be reading off your slide either - it defeats the point of you being present! Pictures and memes never go astray 😜
10.02.2025 03:47 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0In a few quick lines, tell me the CONTEXT and tell me the PROBLEM. In other words, What's the issue and why is it important? If you convince me that it's important, I'll invest more attention and interest!
10.02.2025 03:47 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Use a metaphor - or some examples everyone can relate to. Your research may be in a very specific niche, but thar's exactly why you need to put it in terms that I can understand! i.e. It's like drawing a map for my mind so I can follow along...
10.02.2025 03:47 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0As someone passionate about clear & engaging science communication, I thought I'd highlight a few presentation skills that I LOVE to see. It's all about telling a good story... #genechat #communication #presentationskills

📄PRS may impact genetic discrimination (GD) for life insurance, deterring uptake & research. As PRS use grows, the issue of GD must be addressed. ➡️https://www.nature.com/articles/s41525-024-00407-x

1st up 🧬"Community concerns about genetic discrimination (GD) in life insurance persist in Australia"
📄Despite a partial moratorium, fears of GD deter genetic testing. Legislation for genetic results use in life insurance is needed.
