You are not wrong. It depends on how they use their applicant tracking system, number of apps, etc. But ya, there are times they just use what is scrapped from your materials.
Even so, you should have a presentable resume.

The good news is that these situations are extremely rare. Most jobs won't do anything requiring a legal name until after a signed job offer.

This may greatly impact your ability to move forward in Federal jobs that require a security clearance (or the background check may take far longer than the typical candidate).

Note: There are jobs that may conduct screening before you are formally considered for the position. Using your chosen name means you will not show up in background checks or with past employment references.

Seek guidance from your community and do what is within your comfort range.
