Great to join Natural England colleagues at Langford Lowfields by the River Trent to see how a partnership between TarmacLtd & RSPB is transforming the impact of sand & gravel extraction to benefit Nature. Many lessons as to how new housing & infrastructure can be harnessed for Nature recovery

Thank goodness for that. Seeing those trees hanging on there in such a hostile environment is always an inspiration.

This is the best climate solution I’ve come across yet Just last week, the world received yet another wake-up call when it was revealed that the pace of forest loss globally accelerated again.

Very good to be in the Northwest with the Natural England team to declare another National Nature Reserve - Risley, Holcroft & Chat Moss NNR. Home to the industrial revolution, the new NNR expands the green infrastructure needed for the ecological revolution that must get underway. t.co/6nXK9fcS5x

Tree planting scheme would cover this plot with high density trees, most of which would die (wasted) while competing to rapidly develop dense canopy, quickly losing this flora & insects. Tree planting guidelines are far too dense, driven by natural forestry/timber metrics, not woodland biodiversity.

And of course the social media with their tweaked algorithms, & the matter of who is doing the tweaking

Have a guess. Perhaps start with a survey of who owns much of the media.

OBR: Net-zero is much cheaper than thought for UK – and unchecked global warming far more costly - Carbon Brief Reaching net-zero will be much cheaper for the UK government than previously expected – and the economic damages of climate change far more severe.

While those opposed to climate action cite alleged high costs, the OBR says it’s much lower than thought, & much cheaper than the costs of inaction. Also note that part of the ‘cost’ cited by sceptics is down to loss of petrol taxes as we move to EVs!

Hearing a lot lately that since the UK emits only 1% of greenhouse gases that we shouldn’t bother cutting emissions. Truth is that over 90% of nations in the Paris Agreement can make that same claim. We are not special. All countries must play an ambitious role, & no time to lose

Sickening images of Russians targeting & blowing up migrating pelicans in Ukraine with drone bombs. Just because they feel like it.

1.5 ha of natural colonisation next to small wood. Mostly willow, hawthorn, blackthorn pioneers, some oak, dogwood, apple. Mosaic colonisation towards natural open shrub/woodland leaves lots of rich flowery grassland, full of Lady’s Bedstraw, scabious, Knapweed. Smells amazing, teeming with insects.

Very proud at Natural England today to declare another National Nature Reserve in the King’s Series: the Wealden Heaths NNR in Surrey. Nightjars, Sand Lizards, rare insects, special plants & an evocative landscape to be managed for Nature & people in perpetuity.

I shall be joining Hello Magazine for a live podcast as part of London Climate Action Week. Among other things I expect to discuss HM King Charles’s contributions on ecological themes (which are many, varied & of great importance).

Wonderful to visit Achurch Meadow with colleagues from Floodplain Meadow Partnership, Natural England & Environment Agency. Vivid reminder of the HUGE importance of such places, for biodiversity, clean rivers, flood storage, carbon & more. 99% is gone, but massive opportunities for restoration.

Three species of damselfly have emerged from our small garden pond, & are now laying eggs in there. Such beauty, colour & grace is a vivid reminder of the power of freshwater to boost biodiversity, even in the heart of a city. Much else in there as well, including Smooth Newts & Common Frogs.

This is a positive feedback. That is a further contribution to emissions arising from past emissions. As it gets warmer we will have less & less control over the eventual outcomes. This should be yet another ‘wake up call’, but I expect we will slumber on.
