This year my projects were the special effects on the Clock (art by Rhode Montijo) and Jungle Cruise floats; and the "team sparky" group that maintains the float electrical and mechanical systems. Amanda and I drove the Showboat float. It was a blast!

That actually happens. Usually but not always a less-capitalized fledgling automaker licenses an engine that a major is through with. Ex. Yugo (Fiat design), Saab (Triumph), Rover V8 (Buick).

The next step is, Buick-Pontiac-Isuzu dealers evolve into the import fighters. Isuzu has economy cars staked out so Buick becomes a Lexus/Acura fighter and Pontiac stays RWD with muscle cars and Opel-based BMW rivals.

There’s an alternative timeline where, instead of the Toyota NUMMI tie-up, GM turned Fremont into an Isuzu factory making pickups and econoboxes domestically.

My takeaway from door to door canvassing is that basically no one has coherent politics

To keep it simple, I like the "budget" models, iPhone 16E or 17E. Less fluff, still work great.

Yeah, when the rubber hits the road it seems to be tough for the product planners to stick to a β€œminimalism” brief.

I love the concept of this trim level with high-end performance mechanicals, but everything else is poverty-spec, at an accessible price.

These are exciting, in person they give me that spicy Italian β€œpassion β€œ vibe I got from Ferrari 308 as a kid. But they’re a lot more affordable to maintain. I’ve heard the factory suspension setup isn’t great but can be corrected.

I suspect GM is migrating to the 2-brand volume/luxury strategy like VW/Audi, Toyota/Lexus, etc. with Chevy/Caddy. F1 sponsorship is a marketing investment and Caddy matches the F1 demo better.

FWIW, my rule for FB is that as soon as I see something upsetting I log off without interacting. That just happened with that thread. I do think those troll comments are a vocal but non-representative minority.

The pathology of American automakers is to cheap out on R&D, particularly at the entry level, then get surpassed by a nimbler upstart. It took the Big Three about 60 years, but Elon β€œdisrupted” it down to 10.

Yeah when I was a broke student I ate a lot of bologna sandwiches, spaghetti, basic eggs. The McDonalds dollar menu was a weekly treat.

On days like this I'm glad I switched from a total market fund to USXF, an ESG fund that does not hold Tesla.

Absolutely insane. They are destroying this country's scientific enterprise.

If you're not a scientist and don't know what this means, it basically means they are planning to fund only the top 4% of grants. Historically it's around 10%.

Yeah, it's a good substrate for explaining the subtlety of both a) appreciating and relying on the product as a consumer, while simultaneously b) supporting the workers in being treated fairly.
