the movie recognizes that and therefore dives deep into the context free logic that it establishes. it was almost like watching someone play a game. and i would even argue that without videogames, this movie would not exist.

storywise such cartoons are madlibs, associative ramblings; what happens in the next scene has very little to do with the previous scene except that the motivations haven't changed, since it all serves to produce humor. but it is funnier when you are simultaneously rewarded for paying attention.

i would rather describe it as "60s cartoons realism", in that it solves with costumes, montages of recorded footage, a bit of cgi and heavy editing what was previously only done in animation, but more importantly, the writing cares about logic, world building and payoff.
