My latest piece for @teenvogue.com delves into the horrific story of popular skincare ingredient Retin-A.

Before Retin-A was approved by the FDA in 1971, it had been tested on hundreds of incarcerated Black people in Philadelphia, without their informed consent. The survivors still bear the scars.

You’re absolutely on it @nelsonlflores.bsky.social! I’ve been using research to point this out for years. Reagan even invented the concept of teen pregnancy to gut government programs for the poor. Social scientists were complicit in furthering the narrative.

I’ve authored, co-authored, and co-edited more than 10 books & dozens of journal articles & book chapters over the course of my career. Research/writing are not about individual success or personal achievement. Thinking & theorizing are about collective agency and liberatory knowledge.
