Tyrants view educated citizens as their greatest enemy.
Slaveholders stopped the enslaved from learning to read. Nazis burned books. Dictators censor media.
Thatβs why Trump is attacking education, science, museums, and the arts β to prevent us from learning.
It's Fascism 101.

With all the various international pressures being exerted on Canada, I wonder if we will finally have a federal election (and dare I say provincial election here in Ontario) where foreign policy is a critical issue?
Interesting days...
A recently retired Canadian diplomat is alleging war crimes by the Canadian military, documenting its involvement in the disappearances of hundreds of Afghan detainees. Our exclusive:

Distribution of earnings of post-secondary graduates' by race/ethnicity, Class of 2020, three years after graduation.
(yes the type of post-secondary credential obtained plays a significant role here)
Had provincial spending on PSE had risen at the same rate as overall spending, universities & colleges would be $9.5B better off today.
By a stunning coincidence, $9.5B is almost exactly the increase in international student tuition fee revenue over the same period (albeit distributed differently)
At the kind invitation of the Africa Study Group and the Canada International Council - national capital branch, Dr. Oscar van Heerden and I discussed the current state of South African politics. Check out the recording here.

I would simply point out here that on this scale, it's really hard to pick out where left-wing and right-wing administrations begin and end in the two provinces.
The decline in funding of PSE in Canada is a thoroughly pan-partisan affair.
Just noting here that Apartment rents in Canada rose more slowly in 2024 due to flood of new construction NOT due to the ill conceived and harmful cap on international students.

Congratulations to my wonderful colleague Sarah Casteel on being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, one of Canada's highest honours!
Sarah writes about Black and Jewish diaspora literature and visual art with a focus on aesthetic responses to atrocity.

Yesβ¦they have been at higher levels than in the past. The loss of intl students has had a significant knock to budgets which means there is less money for operations. Not a question of capacity, a question of funding to operate which intl students were subsidizing.
26.11.2024 07:29 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0International students have always been a normal part of post-secondary in Canada. The present caps and policies at the provincial level are now impacting domestic seat availability. Underfunding means fewer courses and spaces available.
25.11.2024 21:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Canadian higher education is facing a serious funding crisis. One that couldβve been avoided. But now Canadians will pay for bad political decisions as there will be fewer seats and programs (particularly in STEM fields). This only harms Canadaβs future
