Why Most People Get β€œSocial Tipping Points” Dead Wrong Here’s a controversial take that shouldn’t be controversial at all: putting solar panels on your roof or buying an electric car is not a social tipping point.

"The real challenge isn’t to tip toward more consumption dressed in greenβ€”it’s to tip away from the cult of endless consumption altogether."

That's the #Sufficiency message.

What Robert Redford Never Lost Sight Of The impact that the legendary actor, director, and Sundance Film Festival founder had on Hollywood is immeasurable.

One of the most emotional parts of this job is writing about the end of a person's life.

Far from morbid, it feels sacred. It's a time to explore a person who mattered deeply to othersβ€”and explain why.

That's what I tried to do here with Robert Redford.

Bottom trawling to continue in English protected waters, government rules Defra says blanket ban on β€˜destructive’ fishing practice disproportionate as MPs urge minister to reconsider

This is infuriating. What is the point of a Marine Protected Area if trawlers are allowed to keep ploughing it?
Yet again, the government has succumbed to commercial lobbying.

In Birmingham we’ve got bin strikes and have had no recycling collection since January (it’s extraordinary - London would tolerate this!) - we therefore don’t have these dilemmas anymore!

The small groups of men imposing flags on Birmingham communities have found a resonance with some people. And certainly not all of the people that welcomed the flags are racist and anti-migrant. But they must accept that many people in this city do not subscribe to their world view…

Alan Kurdi, dead on a beach

Alan Kurdi, dead on a beach

It is very nearly the tenth anniversary of that brief moment when, for 2 or 3 days, British newspapers remembered refugees are desperate human beings who need our help, rather than scum that it's okay to threaten with violence.

Could be part of prof Stefan Krause’s team or if to do with trees, could be linked to Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR)?

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning Drowning is not the violent, splashing call for help that most people expect.

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on.

On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked,

"If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?"

Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

A while ago a lovely German man appeared at our church. He came a few times to look around during our Saturday opening hours, before asking if the piano abandoned in the corner worked.

I told him it was horrendously out of tune, and the cathedral piano tuner had deemed it not worth sorting out.

In 1977, Anglia TV's April Fools gag ALTERNATIVE 3 was aired, a mockumentary about the rich and powerful deserting the Earth to live on Mars, leaving the rest of us to die as climate change kills the planet. Unfortunately, strike action meant that it wasn't aired until 20 June...

Pedestrian crossings and the tyranny of the green man | ETA pedestrian crossing

There is something deeply absurd about the modern pedestrian crossing. You press the beg-button and then you wait. And wait. And wait.

Interminable wait times reveal a deeper pathology. The pedestrian is, at best, an afterthought - at worst, an obstruction.

A bit of good news: NHS England hospital waiting list falls for 4th month in row. The lowest figures since April 2023. Considering the β€œquademic” and winter months, this is an achievement for both the NHS and Labour government.

So it’ll obviously be all over the news, right?

I think this is one of my favourite colourful climate chart type things, because it depicts two things at once:

- Things are going to get worse, no matter what

- The degree to which they get worse depends on decisions made today

Opinion | As a Climate Scientist, I Knew It Was Time to Leave Los Angeles (Gift Article) After the Bobcat Fire, L.A. no longer felt safe.

A few years ago, my friend, outspoken climate scientist Peter Kalmus @climatehuman.bsky.social, moved his family out of LA because he could extrapolate from the data. This week the house where he raised his kids burned down.
