Then within the miles-long ToS… what is the ownership of work plugged into whatever LLM model people wish to “ethically” use? If a student plugs in a fascinating and unique question, does that get vacuumed into the data set? Does the student know their thoughts and ideas might be shared?

Like, that is the intellectual skill set we want to cultivate. How are these things related? What interesting connections can you make? What can you create that is unique to you and your understanding of class material?

Saw a set of guidelines from a college indicating that “brainstorming” and “organizing material into an outline” was an ACCEPTABLE use of AI/LLM.

My friend, that is literally the labor of the high school classroom. What is an idea? How can you meaningfully group ideas?

Followup question: how will you draw a line between honest, and academically dishonest work, when the machine at heart is dishonest? “Well, the machine doesn’t give credit to its sources, why should I? The machine doesn’t indicate direct quotes, why do I need to?”

For all the schools that want to allow, teach, encourage, the “ethical use” of LLMs, I have a question. What LLM model is not trained on data taken in violation of author copyright and intellectual property laws? Essentially, what LLM are people using that’s not a theft machine?

It must be nice to be a sociopath, because all the new products are for you. The smart glasses will give you that woman’s address, the betting apps will finally let you make bank on war crimes.
