UK MPs βoverwhelmingly overestimate the time period humanity has left to bend the temperature curveβ, according to new research published this week.
Is your MP one of these? They need to attend the National Emergency Briefing on 27 November

I've now read the whole article. A good read. One small correction: Leigh Day didn't take on the British state over Horse Hill, they took on Surrey County Council. The British state chose to add itself to the case as an interested party.

Also, just while we're talking, I don't like the implication the Horse Hill case was part of a plot by Leigh Day. It was @wealdactiongroup.bsky.social that decided to seek a judicial review and after first talking to a Barrister, we were recommended to go to Leigh Day.

It was a split decision in the Court of Appeal too and a far from confident one. Lord Justice Lewison, who had the casting vote, had reservations: "I have concluded (not without hesitation) that the reasons just about pass muster".

Some journalists don't realise quite how high the bar is to bringing a judicial review case. The vast majority donβt make it past the permission stage.

@leigh-day.bsky.social is doing what lawyers are meant to do β seeing that the law is applied.
In the Weald case, the court ruled that the emissions caused by burning the oil should be included in the environmental impact assessment. A common sense decision which is surely not controversial.

Hopes at all-time high for Falklands' first offshore development
Joint venture partner Rockhopper is optimistic about FID by year end on Sea Lion project
Perhaps plans for the exploitation of the enormous offshore oil reserves?
The Sea Lion oil field holds at least 800m barrels of oil, 2-3 times bigger than Rosebank.
UK govt has an interest as does the Israeli company Navitas.

Good to hear such strong words from Ed Miliband on fracking.
I hope he will be as forthright when it comes to the issue of oil production in the North Sea. All the same arguments apply, and more so given the relative scale of the offshore fields vs the onshore ones.

There is a list of councillors who supported the motion. No Reform names on it. But perhaps the ten who didn't abstain voted against? Bizarre anyway. Hard to see someone who could oppose 'zero tolerance to hate crime'.

Bad idea! Judicial review is a vital safeguard against the govt ignoring environmental rules and agreements.
Without the Aarhus Convention, @wealdactiongroup.bsky.social and I would not have had our landmark legal win which has changed the whole approach to assessing new oil & gas developments.

There is already a high bar to bringing a judicial review case. Already cases deemed without merit canβt proceed. The vast majority donβt make it past the permission stage.
If the govt wants to avoid legal challenges, they need to make sure their plans are good in the first place.
