Morris dancers on the street in Sidmouth. One has a print of a salmon pinned to their back. Posters behind them read: Mayday!, Protest is not Terrorism, and Folk is Political.

A man and woman in swim gear stand on a beach in a rocky cove. They are smiling for the camera.
Like almost everyone else, I have been feeling appalled, angry and helpless about the horrific news from Gaza. On Friday I joined my brother on a swim challenge to raise money for Medical Aid for Palestinians. I wrote about it here.

A painting of a bison by a prehistoric painter in the cave at Altamira, Spain
Reading it in the Picos de Europa made it extra resonant.
Despite millennia of human occupation, nature is less trashed here than in the UK. It adds a frisson to a forest hike to know there are bears and wolves nearby, even if there's next to no chance of meeting them.

Recommended summer read! Nature's Ghosts by @sophieyeo.bsky.social
Thoughtful book which asks if it's possible to bring back past ecosystems (noβ¦) and how we can learn from the past to support wilder places in the future.
Packed with research but with a gentle tone that makes it a joy to read.

Dartmoor is my local wild place. I love it's drama and beauty. But large areas are effectively becoming desert, mostly due to overgrazing. π

The woman who bested Big Oil
Sarah Finch's victory in the Supreme Court last summer sunk billions of pounds worth of oil and gas projects.
Another profile of me, in the @newstatesman.com this time. Much more of this and my "quintessential modesty" could be undermined.

New government guidance on assessment of offshore oil and gas sites is a big step forward β Weald Action Group
To round off an amazing year, yesterday the government issued new advice on assessment of climate impacts of new oil and gas, which I cautiously hope will make it a lot less likely that new fields like Rosebank will be approved
