Learning History Is a Righteous Form of Resistance It’s a way to combat Trump’s attempts at remaking the past to justify erasing protections for the most vulnerable.

"Learning our history is a radical and righteous form of resistance, and any one of us can do it."

Important historical framing of the current attacks on trans people and LGBTQ+ history by @manionjen.bsky.social

Trump Is the Enemy of the American Revolution He has produced a crisis much like the one the colonists faced two and a half centuries ago. Now it’s our responsibility to uphold the Founders’ legacy.

In my contribution to @newrepublic.com's issue on Trump and history, I argue that Trump has wrapped himself in the mantle of the American Revolution while undermining its principles.

The High Price of Barring International Students Global collaboration is necessary for success, if not survival, in our hyper-connected world.

The Trump assault on international students and researchers ignores the collaboration necessary—economically, politically, and intellectually—for success, if not survival, in our hyper-connected global world. trib.al/49ZgGg6

Really appreciated this!! I have a piece coming out soon(!) that answers the ‘what use trans history in these times’ Q slightly differently (and from the other side of the Atlantic) but there’s a lot here that resonated with me:

Historians fight back. "Ten steps forward. Five steps back. We face a mean-spirited, lie-fueled campaign that aims to make our lives as rights-bearing citizens untenable. Learning our history is a radical & righteous form of resistance & any one of us can do it."

What if History Died by Sanctioned Ignorance? We must mobilize now to defend our profession, not only with research and teaching but in the realm of politics and public persuasion.

Trump has declared war on free minds and free education in order to erase more than a half-century of scholarship and replace it with official triumphal narratives rooted in a brand of pickled patriotism designed to force the past to serve the present. trib.al/OsKGbr7

It is not unusual for presidents to have an interest in history. And until now, no president has tried to directly intervene in what Americans learn about history.

Yet, despite showing little inclination for history, Trump claims to know what Americans are learning in classrooms.

It’s critical to examine the longing behind Trump’s master slogan for ourselves: In a nation racked by bitter cultural and partisan divisions, widespread fears about an AI-driven economy, and a despotic leader in the White House, the desire for better times is understandable.

Trump Against History How is Trump changing our sense of who we are? We asked eminent Yale historian David W. Blight to round up some colleagues to consider the question. Here’s what they had to say.

New! the @newrepublic.com's Sept issue features a great symposium "Trump vs. History," for which I asked the great @dblight.bsky.social to assemble colleagues to reflect on Trump's war on our history. We posted the first four (incl. David's) today; others coming soon! newrepublic.com/series/67/tr...

Honored to have an essay in this special issue of @newrepublic.com organized by David Blight about why we must defend our profession from the Trump administration attack on U.S. history.

All my life I have studied democratization and autocratization. My 1st field trip was to newly democratic Argentina. I then added autocracies to my portfolio: Cuba, Ven, etc. I think I can recognize the stages of transition to authoritarianism. Here are the boxes Trump has already checked off.

Just can’t get over the hubris of the NYT editorial board support for trans people today after five years of reckless,
Ill-informed, reactionary journalism that MADE this an issue in the first place.

A federal court just blocked Elon Musk from interfering with the federal government’s payments system.

There is power in fighting back. We won’t let up until this block is permanent.

Here’s one thing that I’m watching with Donald Trump’s tariffs:

Which billionaires and giant corporations will buy themselves loopholes?

In his 1st term, well-connected insiders got tariff waivers.

This is one more way to make corporate CEOs kiss Trump's ring.

RFK Jr. is a danger to public health. Every Republican senator who votes yes will own the consequences.

When RFK Jr. follows anti-vax conspiracies instead of science, when he greenlights Trump's anti-abortion agenda, when he cuts healthcare for seniors — remember who voted yes.
