One big (small) thing that the USA needs to work on is bringing back small format retail. Out shops are too big.

They’ve built a lot of transit, but tonight is a big test for Seattle to see if they’ve reached β€œreal city” status. There better be videos of people outside in the streets celebrating tonight

This kind of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism is illegal to build in most American cities.

I will also say that those numbers don’t really match up with that I see along those areas but I guess they must be, 20-30 feet is roughly the height of like a single family home i think. I might cross check a couple of these manually over the summer or something. I guess maybe the parking does it.

Kind of crazy that despite these numbers I’m pretty sure the north side mainline was basically at capacity during rush hour pre pandemic. I think the blue line was close too.

Map showing average height for buildings within a quarter-mile of each CTA 'L' station in Chicago.

Individual building height was calculated using the difference between a 2018 digital surface model (DSM) and digital elevation model (DEM) and using the median value within a building's footprint.

DEM and DSM models were provided by the Illinois State Geological Survey. Building footprint data (2017 vintage) were downloaded via the City of Chicago data portal.

Chicago is actually really bad at building TOD. There are only 34 'L' stations in the entire city where the average surrounding building height is greater than 30 feet, and 16 of them are in the Loop.

Yeah exactly, I’m not sure. Maybe the next big stimulus bill someday will include money to extend the Evanston platforms to accommodate 8 car trains and it won’t matter!

Which is of course a massive liability.

I’d assume there’s some sort of technical limitation and they’re probably also worried about people going through the emergency exit doors on the Evanston portions of the route into the out of use cars, where they’d then be able to pull the emergency door open handle and exit the train that way.

Jack Markowski: Adding tax abatements on top of Broadway’s upzoning is fiscally irresponsible Tax abatements are not intended to be a wasteful subsidy for development that is already required to include affordable units.

The campaign against apartments and affordable housing in Edgewater as part of the Broadway rezoning has opened a new front: Attacking a widely praised and effective property tax program that supports mixed-income and affordable housing. www.chicagotribune.com/2026/01/26/o...

The Illinois Senate Primary to determine Dick Durbin's successor is in 51 days.

Of the viable candidates, I believe Lt. Gov Juliana Stratton has come closest to meeting the tragic moment we find ourselves in.

Presently, her candidacy has my vote and I urge all Chicagoans to consider likewise.

ICE just shot another one of my neighbors. They had the person on the ground, being beaten by several agents, and then fired multiple shots. In front of the donut shop where we like to get donuts for our kids.

No I didn’t and I’m sure there were but to me there’s just nothing like the energy the bears bring when they’re good. Hugging strangers in bars, people signing in the streets, nothing better than that.

No offense whatsoever to Michael here but this is definitely one of my β€œman there is a whole other world out there” moments for me because I didn’t feel any of this, but from my view the Bears had the entire city rocking the past 6 weeks or so. And I consider myself very politically involved!
