Four months later...eesh...revision 3 done with at least one more to go. Past me, 90% was very optimistic. I should be celebrating, but...tired.

Oh yes, that changes Chapter 3 too...and Chapter 8...oh and Chapter 11...

This character would not do that, plot or no. The words saying they do are all a lie. Sure that upends the book, but misunderstanding the character so badly - and letting people see that in print - is so much worse.

I met him when he did a reading at a library. I had nothing cool to say. Never meet your heroes...because you will look like an idiot.

I write because I *don't* understand the MC. I'm just as surprised as the reader - perhaps more so since the MC just shredded half my notes in a single paragraph.

Countless revisions prove that I am not a great writer, I am a persistent one.

I have a similar dilemma in a book where the MC's sexuality is all over it - including romance - but the book isn't really about that. I think I would have to accept that bisexuality is triggering, which I have a hard time doing. I don't recall any warning label on movies or tv.

Research doesn't necessarily make a good story. And I absolutely cannot help myself.

You have done better than me. I have given it up for spates too...but then there is the occasional weekend bender and before I know it I've fallen off the wagon.

Sometimes a word just feels a certain way.

"Marcus donned his hardhat and took a breath. He stepped toward the boarded brick mastaba."

And yet, in context, it's horrifying. It's a beautiful meal with an awful message. It's the most appetizing meal in the least appetizing place. Food can say a lot.

The soft, yummy middle of the loaf is where you always reach down to in the bag to make PB&Js. Beginnings and ends are the hardest parts.

Not everyone will love your book. Not everyone will think it's amazing. They'll be wrong, of course. Assholes.

I do understand the desire to keep vocabulary accessible. Who wants to keep a dictionary next to them when pouring through a good read? Interrupts the flow. And...each word is a particular flavor. I can't cook without thyme in my spice rack.

Absolutely critical. Our relationship with food says so much. If I have done my job, food paints a picture of the person eating it.

"The poached cod arrived on bone china edged with hand-painted magnolias, its flesh pearl-white and glistening in a pool of golden saffron beurre blanc."

I know this is a terrible answer, but it's just supposed to take as long as it takes. I am in the middle of realizing on the 3rd revision that I had to rewrite half of the third act - and it's so much better now. Your mind - and all of it - is the only thing that could ever create your work.
