Reject the ongoing censorship of student media on our campuses!
βAdministrative efforts to subordinate campus journalism to public relations are inconsistent with the mission of higher education to provide a space of intellectual exploration and debateβ

The quote βIn our view, Americaβs leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence. In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences. Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education.β β Sally Kornbluth, MIT president, in a letter to the campus community Friday.
ICYMI | MIT has rejected the Trump administrationβs proposal to sign on to the βCompact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education,β which would mandate sweeping changes across campus in exchange for preferential treatment on federal funding.

Graphic of Washington Post poll from April 18-22, 2025, showing "Majorities of Americans oppose various Trump proposals" highlighting two lines in particular: "Increasing the Federal Government's role in how private universities operate" - 28 percent support, 70 percent oppose "Reducing federal funding for medical research" - 21 percent support, 77 percent oppose
University leaders need to understand: they are holding INCREDIBLY good cards.
It is so rare in today's polarized era to have the support of 70+ percent of the public against the Trump admiministration on anything. Universities have thatβAND winning legal arguments.
Trumpβs executive order on accreditation is yet another attempt to dictate what is taught, learned, & said by college instructors & students.
Threats to remove accreditors are transparent attempts to consolidate power in the hands of the administration in order to stifle teaching & research.
