Except for Yumeko and Kiryu… they were a highlight in the game!

Some of the gameplay elements I wished they'd utilize more in a sequel were present even less in Mermaid's Curse, but some were added in more which I really liked! So I feel like gameplay-wise Mermaid's Curse had a good balance, it's just the story and characters I didn't vibe with very much

after replaying The Seven Mysteries of Honjo, I have to say I really liked the first game more. It's mostly just because the tone and story is a lot darker, but also because most of the main characters are adults. And the two high schooler characters it had were just really delightful
