Digital Traces of the Grief of the Dying

I was invited to write a post for the blog of the research group Digital Death: Transforming History, Rituals and Afterlife. Here is the post. I write about grief and illness narratives in the contemporary multi-platformed online moment.

Noitarakastaja Kirjoitin romaanin ja julkaisin sen elokuussa 2024. Noitarakastaja syntyi vuosina, joina musiikki tuntui osaltani loppuunkirjoitetulta ja muutenkin elämässäni oli leimuavaa tyhjyyttä ja turhautumista omaan tekemiseeni. En jaksanut seurata itseäni tutuille poluille, tehdä mitään vain siksi, että oli syntynyt joku toimintatapa tai rytmi taiteen julkaisemiselle. Syksyllä 2021 sain valmiiksi kaiken siihenastisen: julkaisin D/other -albumin ja väittelin tohtoriksi Helsingin yliopistosta. Samalla odotin kuolemaa, joka ehtisi korjata minut joko juuri ennen kuin uusi lääke edes saapuu Suomeen, tai siitä huolimatta.

Since my attempt to disentangle from M began, I have found myself here, Mastodon, Signal (😜) and now Substack peeking in, not sure what to do and where… meanwhile spending far less time on any socials and taking less photos. Everyday and today is a good day for reading research on breast cancer and pink ribbon culture. I had my three-weekly Herceptin injection today. Feeling rubbish. Still curious though.

Yliopisto-opettajan aamiainen ja työpisteen koristelu. Luennoin monikanavaisesta omaelämäkerrallisesta ilmaisusta, toivon ja paranemisen vetovoimasta alustoituneessa kerronnassa. Sopivaa siis, että raportoin täällä 😆. Heti muistin miksi Leena-Maija Rossi sanoo ”opiskelijat ovat ihania”.

Viime lauantaina vietin 43. syntymäpäivääni ja ihmettelin että olen oikeastaan ihan samanlainen kuin 20 vuotta sitten (en tarkoita ulkonäköä). Sisältö ja pinta ihan yhtä tärkeitä. Maut, ystävät ja planeetta lumoaa. Arkistot kiehtoo kyllä reilusti enemmän kuin parikymppisenä…
