This has been in the making for some time! Congratulations to all the colleagues who took up the role of editing this impressive collection! I have contributed a few translations myself from Ottoman Turkish.

When a band of dogs are fighting over a big carcass, another band of dogs comes to drive them away and feast on the carcass themselves. The former band calls this "sedition"; the latter call it "reform". But true reform is this: a band of humans are called for to chase away the dogs.

Sevgi Soysal was gone 48 years ago today. She is a revolutionary writer of passion: passion for life, a better future, joy and laughter. Military banned her novel Yürümek after March 12, 1971 coup d’etat, which also made her a political prisoner. Her legacy is alive, she is our Sevgi! 💜

"Forms of bondage, source of income and concern for order completely distorts scientific discourse. That is why, peoples residing in big cities, addicted to luxury and comfort, are clearly devoid of any virtue and good morals are completely absent."
Sarıyerli Hoca Sadık, Istanbul, circa 1868-69.

Excellence of morals and characters was understood to be essential in almost all traditions before modernity, regardless of the possibility of ensuring these traits are indeed present in a leader:)

My edition on the history of social movements in Turkey came out yesterday which tries to cover not only different eras but also various social agents. Yet of course it still has shortfalls that must be filled with further studies. Thanks for contributors who had and could not submit their chapters✌️

Let me open with one of my favorite quotes then. From the Dune books:

“All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible.”

I think it's an easier sell than other gender related courses hocam: "We have a crisis of masculinity and you are helping society by turning the flashlights back on men!" 😁
